Laramie Navigation unit
So what do I get for the extra $500 for the Uconnect 8.4AN Premium Navigation? I currently have a TomTom stuck the windshield of my 05.
Is there some kind of subscription fee for the maps? What about updating?
I'm sure this has been covered here, but I can't seem to find it.

For my 2012, garmin navigation, they want some ridiculous amount of money for the map updates every year. Cheaper to buy a suction cup one from costco with free lifetime map updates. Also the external one we bought for my wife is a lost faster (zooming/scrolling the map, finding areas, recalculating when you do the wrong thing, etc.) and has more features (lane assist is cool). Maybe your version is better (I hope so).
I really wanted the Nav in the truck when I bought it in 2009. After seeing what they wanted for yearly updates ($200), plus the slow performance, and being locked out of doing almost all functions while the truck is moving, I quickly lost that desire. I mean I could see locking you out of typing an address, but when it's the passenger trying to do it, that's just silly. I know the new units are faster than my 2009 RER, but they're not as quick as you'd expect. Oh, and even if you do spring for the map updates, you'll lose traffic info unless you keep the Sat Radio subscription. I didn't like Sat Radio, so I dropped it after the free first year. Ever since I'd had a big red traffic warning icon on the display, all because it can't get traffic updates.
In hindsight the in truck Nav was the worst purchase I've made on the RAM. Everything else I've used the hell out of. Last year I just broke down and bought a Garmin Nuvi 2555 LMT with the lifetime map updates and lifetime traffic. I got it on sale at Sam's for $170. I couldn't be happier. It's smooth and runs like a champ. Best part is that I can take the Garmin with me when I travel. Pack it up, fly somewhere, and throw it in the rental car. Or I can grab it and we can use it in my wife's car for a road trip. I sure as heck couldn't do either with the truck's RER.
