What's Limewire?

This might be a stupid question, but what's Limewire? A lot of my friends have it and have told me about it, but I still don't completely understand what it is and how it works. Is it safe and is it free? Will it work with a dial-up connection? I have windows media player with 1280 songs on it if that matters. Thanks.

i dont use limewire but...
its a filesharing program that lets you download files from other people.....its really popular for music though...
it is free but you can buy a 20 dollar "pro" version (although if u download the trial version you can then use the trial versiondownload the pro version for free:D).... its not the limewire program itself that isnt safe, its the fact that what you download may contain virus's and all that bad stuff....
...it will obviously be slower with dial up, i just dont know how slow though

If there's anyone here that uses Limewire and has personal experience with it I appreciate it if you'd tell me about it. That whole thing about viruses is kinda making me not wanting to download it. It would probably be a pain to download with dial-up anyway.

dont bother with dail up. assuming you have a perfect connection you would be downloading at a max of 56kb/s. i have never had a problem with viruses. you get to choose what you download so if you know what to look for you can get good files. but dialup is so painfully slow i wouldnt ever bother. i cannt see you getting 56kb/s very often.

if you download the free version you can download the pro version on the free version. with the pro version you get better search results so you are less likely to get shiitty files.

the other option is bit torrent, but again with dial up it simply isnt worth the trouble

Limewire will either not work or will work very slow with slow downloading times, so I would not even waste my time.

I use it no problems,
when downloading .exe file you need to be carefull, when I do I run antivirus on the destination folder constantly

but yes dial-up would suck.
bittorrent would be worse.

RE: What's Limewire?

best ive seen on dial up is 3.5 kB's (=28kb/s) in our area. Bad thing is due to fcc regs 52kb/s is the best you can do. IF i were to use a regular p2p, i would use ares vs limewire. As for bit torrent, its a very effect sharing software if you use some of the better programs for it.

I'll just wait and get it later when I have a better internet connection. Thanks anyway.

i used to use it with a dial up. i would just pick a bunch of songs and start downloading them. when i would wake in the morning they would be done. now we have high speed at home, and i have high speed at school. they say they watch for ppl downloading at school and try to catch them, idk if its true, so i limit my use at school. ive never had any problems with viruses, and i scan my comp frequently. i also suggest downloading it and then downloading pro. there are also some very nice videos up if you catch my drift;)

The safest way is to move dled files from you received folder to another that isnt shared. As for the school thing, some do watch, some isps too like comcast.
