I've been told that Fedora Core is one of the easier distros to learn if you're used to Windows, Ubuntu is another one I hear recommended a lot.

Ubuntu is definitely a great place to start, they put a lot of work into their distribution to make it easy for people who have never used Linux, and the community is top notch.

I would start with Ubuntu, great distro and plenty of online support! Try the live-cd. Just burn it, pop it in and restart your computer and enjoy the bongos! It will not download, unless you hit the install icon on the display screen. There is nothing like "open-source, scripts, commands, ect...Best of all, it's free! Well, 99.9 percent of it!!!

Graphics kick arse! Once you get the hang of things, go ahead and run Compiz and Beryl both offer nice 3d effects. Compiz is the more stable one and Beryl has more plugins, cool effects.

Also, go onto linuxforums and start researching distro's for beginners! And if I were you, I would try learning how-to do a "dual-boot." Dual-boot just means two operating systems on one core, if you get sick of just running of the live-cd.. That way there you can choose which operating system you want to use during start-up, and still keep XP until you realize how gay "Microsucks is..."

Any questions, feel free to PM me or ask here!

Goodluck!
