What's better than this?
I'm looking to buy a laptop in a few months and after a lot of research it seems like this is the top dog for >$1100. But there might be better, so what out there is better than this?
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16834114437 The only real weak point I can see is the hard drive's RPM @ 4200. Also, would I be able to remove the processor at any given point and simply replace it with this 3.2? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819103228 |

Looks pretty good, Toshiba makes good laptops and they're hard to beat for value. I'm on my second Toshiba laptop now, gave my old one to my dad. You may want to see if you can find one with a Core 2 Duo though. I like AMD but their stuff is not stacking up well against Intel's Core 2s right now.

Pros:
Large Hard Drive 3GB of Memory DVD Burner - supports all formats Cons: Video card is on the low end Hard Drive RPM is crap Processor is low end Warranty is for only 1 year and is limited from day one Overall, it's not a bad system. Toshiba produces some quality equipment, and they tend to be very reliable as well. Again, the biggest hang up for me is the warranty. I've seen entirely too many problems with systems that were brand new and having a 1 year limited warranty would really bother me... To me, I'd rather sacrifice a little bit for a better warranty & processor....It just really depends on what you intend to use it for...... as having a Core 2 Duo processor would be a huge step over that AMD chip... Dell Vostro 1500 - $1246 - would ship 2/20/2008 This has a 2yr full warranty PLUS the complete care portion so if you drop it or break it for just about any reason it will be under warranty. That's why it's the extra $150 more then what you posted....and it can be financed.....granted it has a little less memory and hard drive space, but the warranty is better, the video card is better, and it has a better battery life....and the processor is better. http://i.dell.com/images/global/conf...ponents_on.gifMy System Details PROCESSOR Intel® Core™ 2 Duo T7250 (2.0GHz/800Mhz FSB/2MB cache) edit OPERATING SYSTEM Genuine Windows® XP Home Edition edit LCD PANEL 15.4 inch Wide Screen XGA LCD Display with TrueLife™ edit MEMORY 2GB Shared Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 667MHz, 2 DIMM edit HARD DRIVE 250GB 5400RPM Hard Drive edit OPTICAL DRIVE 8X CD/DVD Burner w/ double-layer DVD+R write capability, w/ Roxio Creator edit VIDEO CARD 256MB NVIDIA® GeForce™ 8600M GT edit MEDIA DIRECT Dell Exclusive MediaDirect™ Instant Play Software Application edit WI-FI WIRELESS CARD Dell Wireless 1395 802.11g Wi-Fi Mini Card edit WEBCAM Integrated 2.0 mega pixel Web Camera edit http://i.dell.com/images/global/conf...sories2_on.gifMy Accessories BATTERIES 85 WHr 9-cell Lithium Ion Primary Battery edit http://i.dell.com/images/global/conf...oftware_on.gifMy Software PRODUCTIVITY No Pre-installed Productivity Software edit SECURITY No Pre-installed Anti-Virus/Security Software edit http://i.dell.com/images/global/conf...ervices_on.gifMy Services & Warranties WARRANTY & SERVICE 2 Year ProSupport for End Users and 2 Year NBD On-site Service edit ACCIDENTAL DAMAGE SERVICE 2 Year CompleteCare Accidental Damage Protection edit DELL DATASAFE™ ONLINE BACKUP No Online Data Back Up Installed edit AUTOMATED PC TUNEUP No Dell Automated PC Tune Up Installed edit ON-SITE SYSTEM SETUP No Onsite System Setup edit STANDARD VOSTRO SERVICES TOOLS Dell Network Assistant edit PURCHASE INTENT Purchase is not intended for resale. edit http://i.dell.com/images/global/conf...rvices_off.gifALSO INCLUDED WITH YOUR SYSTEM SOUND OPTION High Definition Audio 2.0 Integrated NIC and Modem Integrated 10/100 Network Card and Modem Labels Windows XP™ Processor Branding Intel Core 2 Duo Processor |

RE: What's better than this?
ORIGINAL: ViperGTS having a 1 year limited warranty would really bother me More to the point, here's a comparison... 2.0ghz Core 2 Duo - 2MB cache or 1mb per core 2.2ghz AMD 64 X2 - 1mb cache or 512kb per core Simply because the Core 2 Duo has morebuilt in memoryper core, it can perform faster then the AMD..... The other thing about the warranty is that with the stuff you buy additional, its still extra.....and having a complete care warranty is well, well worth it to me.... i've seen enough laptops be abused at schools... |
RE: What's better than this?
The Core 2 Duo's are also 64-bit and have been consistently out-performing AMD's offerings. AMD needs to come out with a new architecture to compete in performance.

How much of a cache does a computer generally need? The Intel T9300 2.5ghzhas one a cache of 6mb. Is that over the top?

RE: What's better than this?
It looks like right now I'll probably get what's posted below unless there's something better that comes up by may. Is it difficult to add ram to a laptop and is all new laptop ram the same? I know wheh I tried to add some to a newer desktop from an older one that the notches didn't allign so it wouldn't work.
