What's better than this?

I'm looking to buy a laptop in a few months and after a lot of research it seems like this is the top dog for >$1100. But there might be better, so what out there is better than this?

The only real weak point I can see is the hard drive's RPM @ 4200.

Also, would I be able to remove the processor at any given point and simply replace it with this 3.2?

Seems pretty good to me for the price, especially since it has a rather large hard drive for a notebook and 3GB of RAM already. As for replacing the processor, I doubt you would be able to since most notebook processors are soldered onto the motherboard.

Looks pretty good, Toshiba makes good laptops and they're hard to beat for value. I'm on my second Toshiba laptop now, gave my old one to my dad. You may want to see if you can find one with a Core 2 Duo though. I like AMD but their stuff is not stacking up well against Intel's Core 2s right now.

RE: What's better than this?

Pros:

Large Hard Drive
3GB of Memory
DVD Burner - supports all formats

Cons:
Video card is on the low end
Hard Drive RPM is crap
Processor is low end
Warranty is for only 1 year and is limited from day one

Overall, it's not a bad system. Toshiba produces some quality equipment, and they tend to be very reliable as well. Again, the biggest hang up for me is the warranty. I've seen entirely too many problems with systems that were brand new and having a 1 year limited warranty would really bother me...

To me, I'd rather sacrifice a little bit for a better warranty & processor....It just really depends on what you intend to use it for...... as having a Core 2 Duo processor would be a huge step over that AMD chip...

Dell Vostro 1500 - $1246 - would ship 2/20/2008

This has a 2yr full warranty PLUS the complete care portion so if you drop it or break it for just about any reason it will be under warranty. That's why it's the extra $150 more then what you posted....and it can be financed.....granted it has a little less memory and hard drive space, but the warranty is better, the video card is better, and it has a better battery life....and the processor is better.

I could buy it online at walmart.com, get the extended 2 year warranty for ~$80 and return it to a store for any reason for a full refundwithin those 2 years. Mostly I plan just to do school work with it and some gaming plusvideo streaming.

All the Core 2 Duo chips are 64bit.....in fact, everything Intel produces that isnt Celeron at this point should be supporting 64bit...

More to the point, here's a comparison...

2.0ghz Core 2 Duo - 2MB cache or 1mb per core

2.2ghz AMD 64 X2 - 1mb cache or 512kb per core

Simply because the Core 2 Duo has morebuilt in memoryper core, it can perform faster then the AMD.....

The other thing about the warranty is that with the stuff you buy additional, its still extra.....and having a complete care warranty is well, well worth it to me.... i've seen enough laptops be abused at schools...

RE: What's better than this?

The Core 2 Duo's are also 64-bit and have been consistently out-performing AMD's offerings. AMD needs to come out with a new architecture to compete in performance.

How much of a cache does a computer generally need? The Intel T9300 2.5ghzhas one a cache of 6mb. Is that over the top?

I have a Q6600 2.4ghz Quad Core Intel chip with 8mb cache, or 2mb cache per core.....

And no, that's not over the top......

I use my machine to play video games, photoshop, dvd burning, DJ'ing, etc...

RE: What's better than this?

It looks like right now I'll probably get what's posted below unless there's something better that comes up by may. Is it difficult to add ram to a laptop and is all new laptop ram the same? I know wheh I tried to add some to a newer desktop from an older one that the notches didn't allign so it wouldn't work.
