99 Dodge intrepid won't shift out of L
 

I have a 99 Dodge intrepid 2.7 and just the other day the shifter got stuck in the L position and now will not move. I have removed the center console and couldn't really find the problem, I am pretty sure it is one of three things, my transmission, my shift cable, or my brake lock for the shifter. when I do try to shift it acts as if I am not pushing the button down at all. and before it came to this it was hard to put it in park. i would have to slam it in to make it go. any help would be much appreciated. thanks...
