Default Recall notice

I got a recall notice yesterday for the 2010 Journey I bought for my mom. Notice came to me because I'm on the title for it. Now I get to call the dealer and schedule an appt. for it and then have to tell her which will be fun, fun, fun. She hears recall and thinks her car is going to blow up with her in it...

Anybody else get this recall notice???

I think the only recall on the Journey is simply a Airbag module software update. I would recommend wait until your next Oil change, take care of 2 things at once.
Now Try to explain to her the car is not going to blow up, and the Airbag will still work in an accident!

I took it to mom's yesterday and put it in her glove box so I'd have it when I take the car in. I'll be over there tomorrow for dinner and copy the number down and post it in this thread.
I'm going to go ahead and call and make an appointment to take it in for the recall. She's only put 1300 miles on it since her last oil change (in October!!!) so it'd be a while till it goes in for the freebie oil change at the dealer.

Occupant Restraint Controller Module
2010 (JC) Dodge Journey
NOTE: This notification applies only to the above vehicles built from February 12, 2009 through March 20, 2010 (MDH 021217 through 032000).
The Occupant Restraint Controller (ORC) module software on about 43,000 of the above vehicles may activate two Diagnostic Trouble Codes, relating to the active head restraints, which cannot be cleared.
The ORC module must be inspected for Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC’s) B1C18 (Passenger Active Headrest Control Circuit Low) and/or B1C12 (Driver Active Headrest Control Circuit Low). ORC modules found with either or both of these DTC’s must be replaced. ORC modules found without any of the DTC’s must be reprogrammed (flashed).
Models IMPORTANT: Some of the involved vehicles may be in dealer vehicle inventory. Dealers should complete this repair on these vehicles before retail delivery. Dealers should also perform this repair on vehicles in for service. Involved vehicles can be determined by using the VIP inquiry process. Subject Repair
Customer Satisfaction Notification K37 Page 2
Occupant Restraint Controller Module
Dealers should attempt to minimize customer inconvenience by placing the owner in a loaner vehicle if inspection determines that ORC module replacement is required and the vehicle must be held overnight.
Part Number Description
56054555AE Module, Occupant Restraint Controller
(Five Passenger Vehicle)
56054711AE Module, Occupant Restraint Controller
(Seven Passenger Vehicle)
Due to the small number of involved vehicles expected to require an ORC module, no parts will be distributed initially. ORC modules should be ordered only after inspection determines that DTC B1C18 and/or B1C12 is present. Very few vehicles are expected to require ORC module replacement.
NOTE: DO NOT ORDER THIS MODULE UNLESS THE INSPECTION DETERMINES THAT DTC B1C18 and/or B1C12 IS PRESENT.
The following special tools are required to perform this repair:
 NPN wiTECH VCI Pod Kit
 NPN Laptop Computer
 NPN wiTECH Software (Level 11.02 or later)
Alternate Transportation Parts Information Special Tools

A. Inspect the ORC Module DTC’s
1. Open the hood. Install a battery charger and verify that the charging rate provides 13.2 to 13.5 volts. Do not allow the charger to time out during the flash process. Set the battery charger timer (if so equipped) to continuous charge.
NOTE: Use an accurate stand-alone voltmeter. The battery charger voltmeter may not be sufficiently accurate. Voltages outside of the specified range will cause an unsuccessful flash. If voltage reading is too high, apply an electrical load by activating the park or headlamps and/or HVAC blower motor to lower the voltage.
2. Connect the wiPOD to the vehicle data link connector.
3. Place the ignition in the “RUN” position.
4. Launch the wiTECH diagnostic application.
5. Check for Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC’s):
 If there are no DTC’s, reprogram the ORC module. Continue with Section B. Reprogram the ORC Module.
 If DTC B1C18 and/or B1C12 are present, replace the ORC module. Continue with Section C. Replace the ORC Module.
 If there are DTC’s other than B1C18 and/or B1C12, reprogram the ORC module. Continue with Section B. Reprogram the ORC Module.
NOTE: DTC B1C18 = Passenger Active Headrest Control Circuit Low.
DTC B1C12 = Driver Active Headrest Control Circuit Low. Service Procedure

B. Reprogram the ORC Module
NOTE: The Occupant Restraint Controller (ORC) module is "abort - recovery" supported. If this flash process is interrupted/aborted repeat the procedure.
NOTE: The wiTECH software must be at level 11.02 or later to perform this service procedure.
1. Select “ORC” from the vehicle view screen.
2. Select the “FLASH” tab.
3. Select the flash file from the list.
4. Select the “UPDATE ORC” button and follow the screen prompts.
NOTE: If the flash was interrupted or failed, repeat the reprogramming procedure.
5. Clear all DTC’s.
NOTE: Due to the ORC programming procedure, DTC(s) may be set in other modules (PCM, TCM, ABS, BCM, MIC, WCM, etc.) within the vehicle, if so equipped. Some DTC's may cause the MIL to illuminate.
6. Place the ignition in the “OFF” position, remove the wiPOD from the data link connector and disconnect the battery charger.
7. Close the hood and return the vehicle to the customer.

C. Replace the ORC Module
WARNING: To avoid serious or fatal injury on vehicles equipped with side curtain airbags, disable the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) before attempting any Occupant Restraint Controller (ORC) diagnosis or service. The ORC contains a rollover sensor, which enables the system to deploy the side SRS components in the event of a vehicle rollover event. If an ORC is accidentally rolled during service while still connected to battery power, the side SRS components will deploy. Disconnect and isolate the battery negative (ground) cable, then wait two minutes for the system capacitor to discharge before performing further diagnosis or service. This is the only sure way to disable the SRS. Failure to take the proper precautions could result in accidental airbag deployment.
WARNING: To avoid serious or fatal injury, never strike or drop the Occupant Restraint Controller (ORC), as it can damage the impact sensor or affect its calibration. The ORC contains the impact sensor, which enables the system to deploy the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) components. If an ORC is accidentally dropped during service, the module must be scrapped and replaced with a new unit. Failure to observe this warning could result in accidental, incomplete, or improper SRS component deployment.
1. Apply the park brake and place the transmission shifter in the “Neutral” position.
2. Disconnect and isolate the battery negative cable. Wait two minutes for the system capacitor to discharge before further service.
3. Remove the center console .
4. Remove the mini console from the top of the floor panel transmission tunnel (Figure 1). Service Procedure (Continued)

8. Remove the three screws that secure the ORC module to the ORC module bracket that is welded onto the top of the floor panel transmission tunnel.
9. Lift the ORC module far enough to disengage the locating pins and remove the ORC module from the bracket.
10. Carefully position the new ORC module to the ORC module bracket.
NOTE: When the ORC module is correctly positioned, the arrow on the ORC module label will be pointed forward in the vehicle and the locating pins on the bottom of the ORC module will be engaged into the locating holes in the ORC module bracket.
11. Install and tighten the three screws that secure the ORC module to the ORC module bracket. Tighten the nuts to 12.5 N·m (9 ft. lbs.).
CAUTION: The electrical connector lever arms on the wire harness connectors for the ORC module MUST be in the unlatched position before they are inserted into their connector receptacles or they may become damaged.
12. First reconnect the body wire harness connector, followed by the instrument panel wire harness connector to the ORC module connector receptacles located on the rearward facing side of the module. Be certain that the latches on both connectors are each fully engaged.
13. Install the driver’s side Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) plastic shroud.
14. Install the passenger side black silencer pad located under the glove box.
15. Install the mini console onto the top of the floor panel transmission tunnel (Figure 1).
16. Install the center console.
17. The Module Initialization procedure should be performed first and then the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) Verification Test procedure.
Service Procedure (Continued)
Customer Satisfaction Notification K37 Page 8
Occupant Restraint Controller Module
18. Perform the Module Initialization using the following procedure:
a. Turn the ignition switch to the “RUN” position, check to be certain that nobody is in the vehicle, and then reconnect the battery negative cable.
b. Use a diagnostic scan tool to access the ORC module and go to the “MISCELLANEOUS FUNCTIONS” menu item to perform the “INITIALIZE ORC” procedure to erase the DTC and initialize the new replacement ORC module.
NOTE: Service replacement ORC modules are shipped in an UNLOCKED state and after installed will set an “ORC UNLOCKED - ALL DEPLOYMENT DISABLED” DTC.
c. Follow the screen prompts to initialize the ORC module.
19. Perform the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) Verification Test using the following procedure:
a. Using the scan tool, read and record the active (current) Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) data.
b. Next, use the scan tool to read and record any stored (historical) DTC data.
c. Use the scan tool to erase the stored DTC data.
d. Turn the ignition switch to the “OFF” position for about 15 seconds, and then back to the “ON” position. Observe the airbag indicator in the instrument cluster. It should light from four to six seconds, and then go out. This indicates that the SRS is functioning normally and that the repairs are complete. If the airbag indicator fails to light, or lights and stays ON, there is still an active SRS fault or malfunction. Refer to the appropriate diagnostic information to diagnose the problem.
