speedometer/potetiometer problem
A week ago, my speedometer quit working on my 05 Magnum. Odometers, tach, cruise, etc work fine. Went to a friend who works for a dealership that used to sell Dodges until Chrysler took away their franchise last year. He still had a Dodge scan tool, so he hooks it up and said all 4 speed sensors and the main sensor are fine, but there is an error code on the potentiometer. This makes sense because since this happened, on occasion, when I open the door and the car is off, I hear a clicking, buzzing noise coming from the dash.
So I call the Dodge house and asked them if they could flash the computer or if the potentiometer was a part that could be replaced seperately. Got a big fat no to both of my questions. They then tell me the new instrument cluster is going to be $532 just for the part! Problem is, I'm trading or selling my girl in about 2 weeks (I know, I'll probably cry like a baby when I hand over the keys, but gotta get a van for the youngins and I've put alot of miles on her). So you can see why I don't want to sink $700 or more into the car.
According to the dealership, I can't just get a cluster from the junkyard because it has the VIN burned into it and the correct mileage has to be programmed. So, long story short, does anyone know a cheaper fix for this problem? I really don't want to sell/trade it with a broken speedometer if I can help it. People tend to freak about stuff like that. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
