2002 Neon Engine Troubles

About a month ago I was having trouble with the Neon missing/surging while idling all the way to about 30mph. After that it smoothed out. I changed the plugs and it all stopped. Last week it started up again maybe a little worse and today the engine warning light came on. I checked the codes and it gave me P 1684 and P 0302. When the car is idling, the car shakes and it sounds like if the motor is going to die. When I take off from idle the car is very slow to go and the car surges and keeps going till I hit higher speeds.

P 0302 - cylinder #2 misfiring, what is causing it to misfire, if it is the problem.

The car has 33,662 miles, so I still have some warranty left. Would it be safe to drive it to the dealer. It is about 15 miles from where I live.

Thank you,

I know that the first gen. Neons had ignition coil problems, that might be the source of the miss/misfire.

I have had similar probs on my Neons. Usually coil pack or plug wires is what caused it in my instance.

Let us know if you fix it.

Does warranty cover the problem cause I was told by service dept. that it was. Hope it does cause I can't afford a new coil and wires.

Would I cause any engine damage if I were to drive it? I need to get new brakes and then take it to the dealership.

I'll let you all know the outcome.

Thanks,

I dont know if the warranty will cover plug wires. They are only $35 at the parts store.

Should be ok to drive to the dealer, but ask the dealership first about the codes. I dont want to say its ok to drive and have it be a bad head gasket then it overheats on you or something!

Hope everything works out.

Thanks for the help guys

My father and I took the Neon in to the dealer. My father picked it up and they told him that the problem were the wires. Didn't think they would cause all this trouble, thought it was the coil too like you guys mentioned. Well anyways I'll be the judge when I get the car back and drive it.

Thanks again,
