fuel/water separator question

Hello all,

When draining the water out of the separator, do I let it drail until nothing come out anymore. I let it drail for about 1 min, and it is still coming out. Could there be that much water in it? Smells like fuel though. Any thoughts?

It shouldn't really drain that long. I normally bump it for about twenty seconds and call it good. That would normally let any water out. If there was anymore water in the separator the sensor should kick in and let you know.

When you drain the water out you are in effect draining the fuel filter housing. I let about 10 - 12 ounces out into a clear plastic water bottle. After the drain you can look at the bottle to see if there was any water in there. It will be at the bottom of the bottle. If you find a lot of water then I would drain more out until I got clean fuel only orthe housing was empty. I would also repaet the next day if there was that much water present.

Ok, I get it. I didn't realize that doing that also drained the fuel filter. Thank guy's.

Actually you shouldn't need to drain off more than a few ounces, I usually do 3 or 4 to start. The water should be the first to come out. If you drain a few ounces and its clean you should be good to go. If you see water in what you are catching the fuel in, then you might want to drain a little more. I usually try to buy diesel at a station with a high turn over.

how long do you go between drains? do you wait for the light to come on? or just check periodically?

it was mentioned in another thread to do it at every fill up. guess it depends upon when, where, and how often you fill up.

weather could be a factor too..like lots of rain...

I only drain mine when I'm doing filter changes. . .only had water in it once, and the amount that was there was just a few drops. 48K and I have yet to see the WIF light come on.
