Sometimes it don't pay to do it yourself.

Had a customer bring in his 2003 CTD. Said that he changed his oil and now has no oil pressure. I have not seen many CTD's with no oil pressure. Have seen the engines destryoed and still have oil pressure. After a little investigation, we found the problem. Appears that he couldn't get the old oil filter off, so he pushed a screwdriver through it and it went through the aluminum oil filter head in 2 places. He swears that he didn't cause this problem. But look at the pics and see if the holes don't look just like the end of a flat bladed screwdriver. To make a long story short it cost him about $400.00 to diagnosis and repair. And there is not a good way to tell if the engine is internally damaged without tearing it apart. I just hope he didn't run it too long without oil...

LMAO !!!! :D

I'm just curious, what conclusion would you have to had he not admitted to trying to change his own oil and admitted to the screwdriver thing?

Don't sweat it Drew, I changed the pic because my original choice was a little too big.

I would say in his defense, but he owns a 2003 and used the redneck solution to a stubborn oil filter.

I have found that Dodge oil filters on the FIRST change are a PITA to get off (at least the three I have had experience with). Dodge either overtightens them or the seals are not lubed.

Dave, I am having a hard time picturing exactly what this guy did. Those pictures don't look like the oil filter head to me.

Did he jab the screwdriver all the way through the filter and then into the filter head?
I guess I need to see a wide angle shot to get the picture[8D]

it's not your donny. . it is the pics dave posted that I am refering to.

oh, and yea, the first filter change on my truck was insainly tight. . .I'm wondering if Cummins coated the engine with some sort of sealant before they shipped it to the salito plant in Mexico.
