Fuel filter change
 

First time fuel filter changer. Followed Drew's awsome write up and it almost worked for me.

Drained and opened the canister. Swapped out the filter & o-ring. Turned the key forward and let it primed. Bumped it and pump ran for about 20 seconds. Did it a second time and it ran again. Started it up to a rough idle then BAM! Died.
Tried to bleed the canister- nothing. Opened it and it was empty.

The pump runs, but no fuel is coming out. Do you guys have any guess?
Would filling the canister with fuel as a prime work to get it going?

Do you have an air compressor so that you can charge the fuel tank. This is about the easiest was to bleed a system. Stick a blow nozzle in your fuel tank and cover the hose in the neck of the tank to make it build pressure then have someone start the engine will you are building air pressure in the fuel tank! Let me know how it went?

Just done mine yesterday went good , I'm going to ask a dumb question but did you close the drain ?

Not really a dumb question because that was my first thought. But- yes.
I'm going to try the compressor idea when someone else gets here.

I knew you weren't bein' mean. But yeah, I sure was hoping that was is.

Ok, took the filter out and the canister is not filling up. I can hear the pump running for about 20 seconds when I bump the starter- but no fuel. With the air I am getting some, but not much. Could the pump (I am guessing that is the transfer/lift pump) have gone bad somehow during the change? And if so, since the truck was not running will it have killed the injector pump?

So, anybody in Ft. Worth, Tx want to come play???

Your not going to hurt the system buy charging the tank.
You might even hear/see a fuel leak. But it's your ride keep us updated!

Ok, got the filter full of fuel. Primed it 3 times. Cranked it for about 10 seconds and it started- for about 10 seconds then it died.

Opened up the filter- almost empty. I'm really starting to think that even though the lift pump is making noise it's still not working corretly.

Was everything running OK before you changed the fuel filter?

It was. Well, there was a weird 'surge' at about 1375rpm. If I was cruising at that rpm it would jump about 100rpm every few seconds.

I figured it was time to change since I bought the truck used and I have put about 10,000 miles on it.

After talking to a few others they seem to think, as well as myself, that the lift was was bad but since the lines werew full the injector pump was pulling the fuel through.

As of now the lift pump will not even fill the filter housing with the filter out- so it has to be bad.
