Noob w few q's
 

I have an 06 2500 that just turned 60K and have just a few "simple" questions for the experts:

1. Only towing a couple times a year, pulling a jeep on a trailer, rest of the time it is daily driver. Do I need to tow or haul more for better break-in or exhaust life etc?

2. Dealer did last service (holy rip-off), wanted $250 for "diesel fuel service" sounded like they would just throw some BG44 or something into the tank, was suspicious and declined (of course they print it on the invoice). Thoughts?

3. Dealer also said brake fluid was wonky, change/flush for $100. I tow twice a year and there's that much heat that the fluid is breaking down or getting water in it? Again, was suspicious and declined (of course they print it on the invoice). Thoughts?

4. Life of tires...getting 36K or so on a set of BFG All Terrain TAs, anyone getting better life with similar driving pattern, suggestions as I need a new set.

you dont have to tow any more, it wont affect the life of anything, the fuel system service is probably nothing more than a filter change and an additive in the tank, brake fluid is prefference, but you can do it your self very cheap. and as far as tires go, i like the toyo M/T's... i was geting about 70,000 out of them when i had the v-10 in the 98, but i run them on all my vehicals. they get great traction on just about any surface, last a long time, and i love the look of them, but they are a little more pricey than others

Thanks...yeah $280 a tire from 4WP but if I get just 45K out of them vs the 37K from the BFGs at $230 a tire then we're at breakeven. I'll check out Discount Tire and see what gives.

i just ordered some Nitto Dura Grapplers. I think they have a 60k or 65k tread warranty and they are supposed to wear really well. idk...just what i've heard and read from reviews, thought it might help.

Really, the only thing it may need at 60K is tranny fluid.

I would also check the diff fluid in both axles. Never know if the previous owner did them or not.

Obviously and oil change is always a good thing.

As for the towing thing, every once in a while it's good to throw some weight behind it. It gets the EGT's and temps up for extended periods and helps burn some of the built up carbon off of the injector nozzle, exhaust valves and turbing vanes. Daily driving with no load just doesn't produce the heat and load that these engines were designed for.

Let me know which size tires you're looking at and I'll see what I can do.

What's the deal with the wind noise? When it is blowing & I'm going 60 the howl at the windows is ridiculous. Looks like the 2010 fixed it by having the door edge be further below the roof line...is there a tech bulletin on the weather stripping or does everyone just suffer with it. Or is it just because I drive wind alley by Rocky Flats along the CO Front Range...

Coal Train, thanks, I tow 6 hrs each way to Moab annually so that should burn the crud off. Will check diffs, they're an easy change either way.

Yeah, the wind noise is pretty persistent.

As for when you need to hammer on it a bit......watch your fuel mileage.

If you start seeing fuel mileage drop off, it's time to give it a workout.

Get it down to about 1/4 of fuel, add 16 of PowerService Diesel Kleen and run it like ya stole it.....preferably with the trailer behind it.

That'll get all the funk out of there.
