2002 2500 4x4 cummins....anything to watch out for?
Hi everyone,
Im new here and was hoping to get some advice.
I looking at picking up an 02 2500 extra cab 4x4 with a cummins engine.
Just wondering if there is anything I should be looking out for or if there were any known issues with this model truck.
Thanks!!

Watch out for the 53" block and try to find out if there have been any hot mods used on the truck by the previous owners. Also, if the fuel lift pump goes it will take out the VP44 injection pump. Just try to find out how it was treated if you can.

I'd get the vin and go to dodge and see if they can pull a repair history. Injection pump costs a good amount of dollars to fix (over $1k) and the factory installed one usually won't last to 100k miles.
If the truck has been modded walk away.
If you can take the truck in for a scan on the star scan they can tell you if it's ever been tuned as the tune will mess with the factory computer/engine run timers.
Check the air filter don't want anything other than stock style. Even K&n aren't good as they let to much trash by for this motor.

The only thing that I have had problems with is the lift pump and the VP44. I replaced the lift pump but didn't get it in time, and
the damage was done. Iwould recommend planning to install an aftermarket lift pump (Fass, Walbro). I installed the 150 and
I think it was around $600.00. The new injection pump was around $1100.00 after my core charge refund,
and took me about 4 hours to change out.Other than those few things I love it.
Hope this helps.
