Default 97 throttle rod problem

OK, so I finally got around to adjusting my idle and TPS sensor. After determining that it needed to be adjusted (was only showing .4 volts instead of 1.0 ish) I proceeded to

1. accidentally detach the throttle control rod
and
2. break off one of the ends.

temporarily I rigged the rod up so it might possibly work, but I cant get it back on! Anyone know if there is a trick to this?? I see there is a flat spot on the round throttle stud, but I have been at it for over an hour with no luck.
Tomorrow I will hopefully be able to get or locate a replacement through dodge, but I will still have the issue or attaching it...
It cant really be just that difficult, can it??

All you have to do is just force it on it will go. The rod has to be the same length as it was before.
