I was reading through the owners manual this weekend, looking for maintenance schedule info. It has the two schedules, A & B. One calls for maintenance every 3750 miles, while the other is 7500. The manual also said that most people use the every 3750. When I read the info for the Schedule A & B in the manual, I think I should be using the one that goes every 7500 miles (don't remember which, as my OM is not in front of me).

I am at about 3500 miles and need to make a choice here...

QUESTION: How often do all of you change oil, etc.? Which schedule are you on?

I go every 3000, every car, make, and model. (unless running synthetic)

Cummins diesel owners manual suggests either 7 or 12k depending on use.
My customers still come in at 3k.

 

I changed mine at 7486 miles. Only towed a trailer once for about 100 miles that weighed in at 5000 lbs. My neighbor works at a cat dealer and analyizes oil. i gave him a sample of mine and he told me i had used a little over 35% of the oil which he said was fine. he told me if i was going to do a lot of towing i should change the oil sooner.

 

the manuel suggests every 7k, I'm gonna change mine every 5k.

 

I have done my oil changes around every 10K. now that I'm running synthetics I'll do oil analysis every 5K.

 

I change mine about every 3-4k. Use the same oil as the heavy machines use and I tow a trailer weekly (ATV's or a boat, etc). Nothing to huge. But I do a lot of stop and go to and from work.

 

I'm just curious as to how much farther people could go on oil if they did oil sampeling. on another board I frequent some guy has gone well over a year and 50K on the same oil. only changed the filter every 10-15K and topped off with fresh oil. I know he was useing synthetics, but not real sure which.

I just need to find an oil analysis in my area.

I fall closer to Schedule A than Schedule B, but Schedule A has intervals that really make me nervous. I think I'll go ahead and follow Schedule B.

I got to re-reading the manual just now. Apparently I mis-read the first time through. Schedule B has intervals of 3750, but the engine oil is scheduled for every 7500 miles. Schedule A has engine oil scheduled for every 15000 miles - wow!

The only thing that is consistently scheduled for every 3750 on Schedule B is "Lubricating Front Drive Shaft Fitting (2500/3500/4x4). And that is only for 4x4's - right? The same grease fitting that Drew has a how-to posted. Please tell me if I am wrong. My truck is a 4x2, so I am not looking to do this.

I'll be taking her out for my first tow woth the camper this weekend. Taking the family to Seaworld and Longhorn State Park (Caverns/Caves to tour & explore).

 

I just simply follow the owners manual on every vehicle I own.

When you tow with the truck you will know why you bought it. These machines ROCK for towing. Happy camping.

 

Oil is cheap compared to replacing the motor. How often you need to change your oil depends more on what you are doing with your truck, how you use it. I wouldn’t go more than 15000 miles just city driving with shell oil. I go to a lot of horse shows pulling around 13000 lb long distances quit often, I normally have to change my oil around 15000 miles. I check the oil every 2-3 fill ups, more so to see how the oil looks than the level. Oil is a big part of engine life, so no point in chancing it.
