Question AC Compressor Chatter?

I have a '99 Dodge Ram Van V-6. AC works fine....but I am starting to hear a chattering noise when the unit is engaged in AC mode. Turn it off and the noise goes away. Is this the telltale sign of a compressor going bad? Or is it just a clutch going bad and can be replaced easily and cheaper than complete unit? If so...how do you replace just the clutch...special tools etc?

All response is greatly appreciated. Thanks~~~~~Ron

It's usually a sign that the front bearing in the compressor is starting to go. Your best bet is to start looking for a junkyard compressor and swap it out.

Try changing your serpentine belt tensioner before getting involved in the A/C compressor swap. You might save yourself a lot of time and effort.

Just replaced the tensioner, belt and idler about a month ago. Thanks
