Odometer

My 1992 B350 odometer doesn't work. The speedometer works fine but the mileage indicator doesn't move.
I bought another out of a junk yard and it does exactly the same thing.
There are only 2 wires coming from the distance (speed) sensor on the transmission and one of them goes to ground. That leaves one wire to go to the Single Board Engine Controller. Everything else works fine, so I don't think the SBEC has a problem
Is odometer failure a common occurance???

The odometer problem is usually due to a stripped plastic gear inside the instrument cluster.

Pull the instrument cluster and carefully take apart the odometer. Look to see it it's the 20 or the 16 tooth gear that's broken. Order and replace that tiny little gear, get it all back together, and your odometer should work again.

Wow, you make it sound so easy!!! I have the old speedometer laying in front of me and I am NOT a watch repairman. Can this really be done at home???

Yes it can. Do you have tweezers and the tiny screw driver set?

Florida boy 01-31-2011 07:51 PM

Yeah, I have tweezers and jewelers screwdrivers. It's my eyesight and steadniness of hand that concerns me. I'm far past the Spring Chicken phase. I'll give it a try this weekend.

I can see why you guys say replacing the odometer gears is easy. Obviously there were two types of speedos used during that era. (1992)
I have sent off for replacements and I've been sent two that are totally different than mine. Attached is a photo of the two with captions.
Anyone know of a reputable salvage yard. Dodge wants $340.00 for a new one. I'll go for $150.00 or so if I know it will work and match the one I have in mine.
See attched

What about the little plastic gear? You're saying it didn't fit?

Florida boy 03-04-2011 05:48 PM

What I'm saying is, on the one that came out of my van, I don't even see a plastic gear and with all the motors and switches and diodes, I'm not about to tear into it.
