3 speed A727 Trans for 1994 ram van b250

I have a 94 b250 and transmission gone out. It says 3 speed A727 transmission. Can anyone give me the approximate cost of a used transmission for this and what would be a good price for shop to put in?

Thanks

A used transmission costs about 300-700 depending if you take it out yourself at the junkyard or if they do it for you.

Install is about 200-400.

I had mine rebuilt about 4 years ago for 1000.

Basically you will need to see what you can find.

Now if you have a friend or know a good independent Chrysler/GM/Ford shop you can get this price down 500, used, but the timing would have to be right.

Your lucky there are 727(s) all over the place you will be able to find one at a salvage yard for as little as $200- $500. A question for you is why did your current one fail (heat, low fluid or wrong fluid?) 727s are incredibly stout units.

I would flush or better yet replace the tranny cooler if you have one and flush the lines. A used unit should have cherry red fluid without bad smells (burnt) and you will be good to go. Consider installing it yourself as it is a easy job on B Vans, bell housing bolts are all easy to reach and on most 8 lugged vans the job can be done with the wheels on the ground no need for jack stands. Wish I had some idea what a local shop would charge for installation but I do not but I imagine it would be reasonable.

Best of luck with the tranny and van lastly Happy Holidays to you and your family.

Thanks guys! The current transmission has been leaking for years and I've tried to keep filled. Just finally went out.

I got a quote from a local shop place for $300 to install

I am gonna call around junk yards and see if I can get one. but got a quote from one place for $675 (plus core)

I really don't want to spend $1000 on this van.

The $300 for install is not bad but call a salvage yard who are not heavy drug users like the one who quoted $675+core. A local yard here in Massachusetts has three 727s in their warehouse on a rack with torque converters $275 (no core charge) and they will load it in your pickup or van no charge.

"727s in their warehouse on a rack with torque converters $275 (no core charge) and they will load it in your pickup or van no charge."

Now that's a fair price and exactly what I was hoping for. Gonna start calling today!

Thanks I was hoping I wasn't thinking wrong on that price!

Anyone know if all 94's on the b250 with 3 speed transmissions were non-lock up?

iodj44 12-12-2016 08:04 AM

Call a salvage yard or auto parts store and give them your VIN and they will tell you.

I would be surprised if it was not lockup, the salvage yard can confirm if what they have fits, because 727(s) are not all the same lengths. Some tail shafts are longer than others.

i called one guy today and he wanted to know if it was a small or big block. How do I tell?

Spent most of day at junk yards and calling NO LUCK :(

I was given the following printout. Maybe it could be of use to someone else looking for this transmission.

LA motors 273,318 and 360 CID along with 5.2l and 5.9l Magnum motors are known as Dodge small block engines. I do not know where you live but you say locating a used replacement is difficult, I believe you have a dilemma.

You seem a little inexperienced at this which is fine because we all were at one time but some times spending a little more money than you wanted to for the easy way out is the wise and right decision.

What I am saying is maybe it is time to consider having yours rebuilt as Funair02 mentioned earlier. If you could get it done for ~$1000 that would be a great deal also I imagine the rebuild would come with some kind of a warranty.

Well that is just a little food for thought.

izzyinstl 12-13-2016 08:09 AM

yes, I am new at this. Just really love working on cars but am limited to basic things. Tranny is out of my league.

I do have a guy who would rebuild and warrant it for $1000

The van is old and a lot of rust. But i have done alot of work on it and it looks pretty good and engine is running good.

Big decision for me to spend that on it. I am going to keep looking for a used one locally. Seems all the one I come across are 5.9L engines with 4 speeds.

You are correct but money is tight.

I do appreciate all the help and ideas guys!

Merry Christmas and happy holidays!

Izzy

The 238/3.9L, 318/5.2L, 340/5.6L, & 360/5.9L engines are small blocks.

Alloro, thanks for the correction 340(s) had totally slipped my mind.

I wasn't correcting you, if I was I would've only adding the missing information to what you already provided. I was replying to the post on page 1 and had not yet seen your post on page 2.

Ironically 340(s) are always in the forefront of my mind. :)
I sure miss my 340 Duster. :(

Another thought, ask your salvage yard if a 904 could be substituted for the 727 because unless you drive heavily loaded and or pull a loaded trailer daily/weekly a 727 is not necessary IMHO.

That would make locating a replacement much easier. Should be a possibility because I believe your 727 operates independent of any computer or control module so other than the gearing (likely) being different the van should not be able to tell the difference and yes the lock up should still work as I think it is a speed threshold that activates the locking/unlocking.

Alloro you know I have never had the chance to drive a 340 powered car, guess something for me to still look forward too.
