I think I may have hit jackpot! I am talking to this one dude with a Stealth TT near the West Coast and I may have a Stealth by next week. I am just curious though since I have never done an out of state purchase, how would I handle the transaction?

1. Would I need to bring cash in hand or some kinda Cashier's check or maybe traveler's cheques for that amount?
2. Also, what exactly would take place?
3. Would I simply pay him and then he would give me his title, keys, and car and when I get back to Texas I register it under my name?
4. Will I need to buy a new License plate when I pay for the TTL?
5. Should I take the car to have it checked out before hand, or rather, where should I get it checked out?
6. The guy said something about the check engine light coming on, how would I go about fixing that?
7. What do y'all suggest I do to prep the car for a drive back?
8. What questions should be asked in terms of it being driven?
9. Any other suggestions?

I would discuss that with the seller and find out his preferred method of payment.

I'm not exactly sure how it works in Texas/Cali...but here in Ks/Mo he would give you a signed and notorized title/bill-of-sale you'd sign the title in the appropriate area.

That pretty much sums it up. In Ks., before you can register a car bought out of state, the Highway Patrol has to do a VIN# check. Not sure about Texas.

You may be able to transfer an existing tag, but yeah that is how it works.

5. Should I take the car to have it checked out before hand, or rather, where should I get it checked out?
Since you will be going out of state, that may not be an option. Read the buyers guide at the top of the forum for things to look for.
If you were buying local, you could take it for inspection to a trusted mechanic.

Depends upon why the CEL is coming on. The ECU stores trouble codes. If you take an analog multi-meter you can pull the codes from it. There is a how-to write up on Stealth316.

7. What do y'all suggest I do to prep the car for a drive back?
Make sure all fluids are topped off, tires have plenty of air, make sure the tire changing tools are there and the spare if full, a small tool kit. Take an "In Transit" sign with you, since you will be driving tagless. If you have all the proper paperwork, the police shouldn't give you too much trouble. Call your insurance to let them know what you are doing and see about getting insurance on the car before you go, maybe call AAA, just in case. Pray. :D

eh sorry about that I typed that up with lack of sleep. What I mean't was vehicle history and stuff like that, and if you had any suggestions to what other questions I should ask or do.

I have a down payment on it of 100 to hold it. I could not talk the price down, but oh well, the value is still good. Everything I am getting:

The car
All OEM parts he has installed/replaced
extra set of brand new performance tires
keys
title
etc.

All I have to do is get a small loan to ensure nothing happens on transit back home and get a plane ticket to go over there. All fluids have been replaced and he even gave me a Carfax showing the car has a clean slate.

Sounds great, congratulations. What are the vitals; color, year, mileage??

You might want to call your DMV to see what you need to get it registered and what needs to be notorized, such as the bill of sale, title and an odometer statement. You also might want to find out in any inspections need performed before you can tag it. I know every state is different.

It's a 1991 Kutani Red Pearl Dodge Stealth TT. It has a bit over 90,000 miles. I have already seen pics of it and it looks like it has been cared for. the Engine bay is a bit dirty, but the guy hasn't had it long enough to detail that. The only thing I distaste is the fact that the hood was painted black (driver seat has tears in it, but that's normal and i didn't care about that). Other than that I like it because not only are Stealth TTs rare, but this exact color makes it extremely original. I do know that in Texas you have to get it inspected before you can get a license on it, and it's fairly cheap so I don't have to worry about it.

He hasn't had it long..? Why is he turning it around so quickly? You should post some pics of it.

Those are a few things he has replaced or upgraded. One of the key things was the replacement of the drive train fluids with Redline. On top of all this getting an extra set of snow/performance tires will result in not having to buy tires down the road. As you can notice there's the wear on the driver's side seat, no biggie at all, overall in my opinion (even though I have not driven the car itself yet) I believe it would be awesome. I just hope it can make a 1400 mile trip back to Texarkana. This car has everything I wanted in a stealth and really just requires minimum fixing. I am going to go get an airplane ticket later in the morning (it's like 2:20 AM now) and then read up on different things to look for in these cars as well as get more info. Three things I do have ready (or will need from him) for him to sign are the:

Texas Application for License Certificate
Bill of Sale
Title

Other than that I would probably say I am ready to make the trip over there. I got approved for a 3k loan (1k held as collateral along with my own car title) so I got 2k to work with in case anything happens that needs fixing, not excluding gas. But hey, after talking to a co-worker at work, I found a route that cute the time by a 3rd and the miles nearly in half, resulting in less mileage on the car and possibly a one day drive to Texarkana (19 hours) versus a two or three day drive (29 hours).
