hey i know this was a while back, and im jus tnow getting to it, but i am painting my silver sidesteps black, and i have about 3 coats of primer and now have 3 coats of paint on them. it looks pretty good. just wondering, how many coats of paint should i put on it? i dont want to have little rock chips where u can see the silver under it all. but im not sure how many coats of paint is needed.

 

When I painted my steps black I sanded them down real good first with the electric sander. Then I primed them with some self etching primer, then regular primer, paint and then clear. I used one coat of the self etcher, one coat of regular primer, two coats of black and two coats of clear. So far I don't have any chips in the paint.

 

Yes. Sanding and priming will get you the best results, but if you did not sand priming it and then putting at least three coats is good. More the better.

 

if you dont sand and prep it correctly it will NOT adhere and it will def chip.....sorry guys been up in maine visiting fam so few post were made im back home now and will def fix the grill some new silver paint will be laid on the mesh and ill kick in a new flare prolly this weekend when i got back it looked discolored so i need to get it fixed asap i will do my best to get pics might be of 2mp cell quality my camera took a shiat.......

 

Hey thanks for the replies, Ifirst sanded it, then put a coat of primer, and sanded the primer, I did this 3 times before I put on the coats of paint. Good?

 

Sure.. you really did not need to sand the primer but ok. Yes. And if you ever sand primer use a higher grit.. so yes good job! Get some pics so we can see how it looks!
