EFI/Carb swap Club

Club for anyone who has swapped to Carb from EFI or vice versa.

1996 Dodge Ram 1500, started out life with a 5.9L Magnum V8 EFI, swapped to a 5.2L Magnum V8 with a Carter AFB 4BBL carb. Love it every bit of the way!

I went the other way. I've got a '67 Charger that I put EFI on. The fuel injection plays nicer with the turbo's!

You got turbos? Lets see some pics!!!

WOW! Nice work!!! A twin turbo injected big block. :icon_drool: What motor is it a 440? Any videos of it running? Have a build thread anywhere? Love to read more about it. I think you need bigger tires on the back! :D

Thanks for the compliments!

I don't have any videos. It runs very well though. I've done the Long Haul of the Hot Rod Power Tour three times, and drive it from Southern Indiana to Montana and back recently. I don't really have any build threads, but I would be happy to answer any questions. The engine is a 451 (400 block w/ 440 crank). I'm sure you noticed that there weren't any plug wires in the pictures. The ignition box is a 4 channel CDI triggered by the ECU and firing 8 coils mounted on the pan rails. Backing up the engine is a Viper 6 speed tranny. On the dyno several years ago, it made 729RWHP and 711RWFTLBS. Then I got 17MPG on the way home.

What kind of ecu are you using for the fuel side of it? How much boost? Living in Indiana i'm sure you've been to the mopar nats. How about Carlisle?

10 lbs boost

I'm currently running an Autronic SM2. While I like it, and it's been good to me, it doesn't run closed loop. As such, Santa brought me a new Holley Dominator EFI for Christmas. I plan on attending the factory training before I change anything. As for boost, it's regulated to 10lbs. On the dyno, it went to12lbs, but didn't make any more power. So I'm hitting a wall somewhere. That's okay though, a 700 HP street car is still pretty good. I have indeed been to the Nats, but its been a while. Before the car had all of it's current drive train in fact. I haven't made it Carlisle yet, though I've heard great things. This being the 50th anniversary of the Charger, I know there are some other fastback owners that will be there. I'm giving it some thought. Are you near either one of those show? What Mopar do you have?

Witch Holley Dominator EFI did santa get? I hope it's not tb injection. Did you ever consider using a megasquirt controller? I think i seen a guy with a similar set up as yours on youtube using one. Someone makes a fi six pack set up for the big blocks, Have to see what controller they use. I was at the nats way back in 1990 but haven't been there since. :( I attended the very first Chrysler's at Carlisle along with the first mopars at Englistown. Have been going to them (most of the time) ever since. Carlisle is definitely a show to go to. I'm in New Jersey so both of them are relatively close. As for mopars i have a lot! Unfortunately none of them completely built like yours. It's a long story but eventually i'll get back to working on them. 68 Charger 71 Road runner and a 73 Challenger are the early year mopars i have. Here is pic of my Challenger, The body is untouched and in the same condition as i bought it. The drive train is another story. :)

You're Challenger looks great. You mention the drive train isn't original. What's there now? As for a six pack EFI, I remember something about that a while back, but I don't remember any details. I would think pretty much any stand-alone controller would be able to work. You might find it challenging to dial in the areas of the map where the throttle is mostly closed. With three throttle bodies, even small changes in throttle position are going to result in large airflow changes. I'm sure it's nothing a competent tuner couldn't handle however.
As for me, don't worry, no TBI. I'm just planning on a ECU change (and unfortunately all the associated wiring). All my mechanical components will remain. I'm actually happy with the Autronic. The reasons I'm planning on a change, are to have closed loop ability and the self tuning feature. The car's driveability is great, but due to a snafu on the dyno, it runs rich. Really rich. As I mentioned, it doesn't operate closed loop, so it never self corrects. Recently I installed a wideband O2 sensor and have made some changes. It's difficult to do a good job on the street however, and the dyno is about six hours away. My hope is the new system will offer even better driveability and maybe even improved economy. There is a possibility of more power, but I'm traction limited anyway. More power is just more tire smoke.
