Suggestions on 5.9 Performance mods?

I've got a 1998 ZJ 5.9 Limited, and want to make it roar a bit more.

It actually have 199,035 miles on it, and has a weird noise on start-up and hard acceleration accompanied with smoke. I think the rod bearings are bad.

So... Next up, I may try and build a new 5.9. I would like to find a good set of headers, a stroker kit if I can, but beyond the obvious, what else can I do, and what types of gains should I expect? Are there any real weak links I need to be concerned with?

This will be on road only, as my wife has an older 5.2, and we're looking for a Cherokee as our off roader.

TIA,
Theron

Not sure about what to expect with headers, camshaft, stroker, etc. As far as the weak links go; the factory intake manifold (two piece), transfer case (viscous coupling sp?), and rear differential (aluminum Dana 44) all come to mind. Check out the www.nagca.com (North American Grand Cherokee Assosciation) site to find more details about Grand Cherokees. Good Luck!

With a decently built 5.9 with ported & polished heads/intake,performance camshaft & PCM, performance ignition, & headers/exhaust system you can go anywhere from 300-450hp naturaly aspirated. I imagine you could do alot more if you build a stroker. Here's a decent article if you're interested in doing a stroker.

2.02 heavy duty heads (out flows the r/t's), 52mm fastman TB, 1.7 crower roller rockers, edlebrock shorty headers, K&N CAI, 3" single cat back exhaust... M1 intake, or cut your runners down 1.5" on the Kegger.

should scream. once you have all that done, get a B&G flash done on the pcm to match your motor setup.
