Over-drive does not work, any idea's?
So guys I just bought a 95 ZJ with the 318 (5.2L) in it. Over-drive though does not work and when I got under it, I found a sensor or something on the driver side closer to the t-case that has three wires that were cut. But I couldn't figure out where it all goes to. But could that be the reason why OD does not work? it shifts fine and everything, in fact it was replaced about a year ago with a rebuilt Jasper unit.

first thoughts:
is the CEL (ck eng lt) on? does the cel come on @2sec during start or with key in run? no other issues ie speedo inop? full time 4wd or PT - if pt does 4wd engage? is vehicle STOCK? |
Turn the key ON-OFF-ON-OFF-ON and watch the OD off button. Count the number of blinks from the light (just like a CEL.) Let me know what you get.
Not sure what would be cut... Is it on the transmission or transfer case? The neutral safety switch has 3 wires, then the VSS has 3 wires. Then you have the output speed sensor, transfer case switch, and the transmission wiring harness. You have the 46RH transmission, so the only thing electronically controlled is OD. |
Hey sorry. I went ahead and checked the codes even though the CEL wasn't on. and I got (going from memory) 37 and 45 which were for the OD and VCC (i believe...) circuit issue. So once I move and get the 242 from the junkyard I'm gonna go ahead and pull the transmission pan and replace the solenoid and see if that fixes it.
Oh and the sensor with the cut wires is on the transmission on the drivers side down by the transmission pan. oh and no other issues. but I do have the 249 (awd) and the previous owner took out the front drive shaft and destroyed the Viscous coupler. |
Hm. I'm pretty sure that is for OD. There should be only 3 wires going to the PCM on that transmission. Can we get a pic?

Uh, does your Jeep start without any trouble? Will it start in drive? That's your NSS.

starts fine. it does not start in Drive or any other gears cept N and P.

Post that up on JF. It very well may be the OD solenoid connector. I can't really say for the 46RH, but on my 42RE the NSS is identical to that.
