The New Beetle and the Jetta are built on the same platform. Both are produced at the VW plant in Mexico, which was rampant with quality and build issues with the first generation New Beetle ~ 1998. It got so bad that US VW dealerships were refusing to accept delivery of new cars. So, VW finally woke up and shut down the plant for a month and made every single worker requalify for his job. The end result was quality almost on par with the German built machines. AFIK, the Jetta is also built in Germany and German built Jettas are very reliable vehicles.

To go a step further, the TDI, or Turbo Diesel Injection, is an extremely powerful and efficient engine. Mileage of up to 50mpg highway is not unheard of and off the line it will plant you in your seat. The TDI engines have a stellar reputation for reliability.

I try to change your parents mind about the TDI. Thats the only good engine in the beetles. might spend more up front for the car, but that will quickly be made up in fuel savings. bring it to a car mechanic your family trusts and have him check it out quick. a $50 look over beats a $500 repair bill...
