Default 7.62 x 39 for Deer?

I just posted this on one of my hunting and fishing related forums and have gotten a ton of responses (about 25) in the hour and a half it's been up there but figured I'd throw it out here as well.

I've pretty much been carrying my Ruger M77 .30-06 into the woods for the past ten years or so. To be honest, I've not taken a shot at a deer in probably a dozen years over 125 yards, and 60 yards is probably about the average.
I'm thinkin' seriously of bringing my Ruger Mini-30 into the stand this year. Shorter, lighter & easier to carry and from everything I've read, is just about ballistically equal to the venerable old .30-30.

Obviously, I'd be staying away from the bulk/surplus ammo for hunting and get something along the lines of Remington Core-Lokt PSP ammo for this purpose.

Any of y'all taking deer with a 7.62x39? What are your thoughts?

I still love shootin with my old winchester .30-.30, most reliable gun I ever owned. for short distance shooting (ie <250 m) the 7.62x39 should work great. Shyt I still shoot open sites the odd time just to say that I can lol.

Well where I grew up hunting, 200 yard+ shots were fairly common and the 7.62x39 would pretty much just give a deer a good bruise at distances much farther than that. LMAO.

But, as stated, since moving south, the deer are a good bit smaller and the vegetation much more dense, making it rare that you even have the opportunity for 100+ yard shots.

So I am thinkin that round should be fine, just wanted to see if anyone were using it...
