If I was getting my first .45 it would be a 1911, the Taurus is a loaded gun for a great price, but I've heard some bad reports about FTFs.
Get you a Springfield 1911...

^+1 if you buy a .45, but honestly, find a range that rents the ones you're interested in and go fire em. Pick one that you find the best for you. That being said, a good basic 1911 is a solid platform that you can modify easily in the future just like your truck. For instance I just put new lighter trigger and hammer/main springs in my 1911 and the trigger is so much nicer now which is saying alot since the trigger was pretty crisp before. I should also point out that after @2,500 rounds, FMJ and JHP even a few snake rounds, thru my Springfield 1911 mil spec, I have yet to experience a single malfunction, it goes bang every time the trigger is pulled no exceptions.

The truth is they look cool. I just googled them and those two looked the best. I only shoot trap. I got tired of paper punching.
