Iconic and most recognized are two different things. I think we need to split this into two different categories.

Oh yeah, when I saw iconic, the first car to come to mind was the 64.5-69 Mustang. While it may not have been the first muscle car, it brought in the pony car era, and was the fuel that fed the fire for the big three to compete against each other for the fastest, best handling, and all around greatest looking car, that's still happening today in 2010.

I'm amazed that it took people this long to fully see that. I was kind of leaving it all open so that if people wanted to pick two, then that's fine...

They are kind of the same thing.

"One who is the object of great attention and devotion; an idol"

"any person or thing that is revered"

"great attention"... "idol"... "revered"... these words can lead you to and mean most recognized.

I am shocked nobody said the Hemi 'Cuda, unless I missed it.

Maybe it's cause I was born in the late '60s but the most recognized car to me is this one (although the Smokey and the Bandit Trans Am would be a close second)...

I lean towards this, but that is because I like them. No one can deny the performance it turned out in the mid 60s!
