my stratus was mechanically fine for the first 60,000+ miles...its still a dodgubishi that is "well known" for having all sorts of problems...from bad suspension to engine issues to broken interior parts. ive had the car since it was new and its been to 135 more times than i know without any major issues. again, that is a car built by dodge and mitsubishi...two companies who dont tout high quality.

i do not believe that an american worker makes a lesser product than a japanese worker but for the last ten (?) years weve had the idea forced down our throats of "toyotas are perfect and last forever". toyota blowhards will use a point of "poor quality american labor" but i dont think that is true at all. perhaps at some point it MIGHT have been the case but not anymore. when a car sucks, its not because of the UAW guys putting it together...if that was the case, the problems would be labor related and not parts related. all of toyotas recalls seem to be part-related and while some say "its not their fault", they were the ones who commissioned those parts and installed them on their vehicles. toyota also knew about these issues for years and did nothing about it while people died. its not like they are recalling a handful of 2010MY vehicles...they are recalling vehicles from as far back as 2004 and the shortest period of recall time for a couple of vehicles dates back to 2009MY. worst thing, the vehicles that they INSISTED werent affected (prius and camry) are both hit by this and the prius recalls extend back to 2004...
