Default importing a car

Does anyone have any experience importing a vehicle from europe to the states (that isnt available here). are they road legal with minor changes or is there major pain-in-the-*** changeovers that need done.

it depends on what the car is..some cars just arent legal for importation.

I was considering bringing a German spec 'Benz back from Germany years back, but the cost of adding pollution equipment, DOT approved lighting, safety equipment, etc would have cost way more than the American spec version.....

this one is one of my favorite European cars... 2CV that and the Smart Car...but thats coming in 08'...anyways.. Flaming which car are u looking at importing?

nothing in the immediate future, but just looking into the costs of getting something very unique to drive around in. something vauxhall would be great. VX220 looks sweet, however looking at currency conversion alone its like 50k USD. all this changing stuff like dusty mentioned i think it would be too expensive to be beneficial
