Default Carl Edwards Sweep races at Atlanta (Nextel Cup Series, Busch Series)



Lap 325 -- Carl Edwards nips Jimmie Johnson at the line (2/100ths of a second) to win the Golden Corral 500 to become the first driver to sweep the Busch and Cup races at Atlanta.

Edwards becomes the 166th winner in NASCAR's premiere series.

The rest of the top 10: Greg Biffle, Mark Martin, Kasey Kahne, Brian Vickers, Michael Waltrip, Dave Blaney, Scott Riggs and Michael Waltrip.

Lap 320 -- Jimmie Johnson still leads, holding off Carl Edwards after he got loose high on the track and scuffed the tires. Johnson is ahead by more than a half-second, and Biffle is closing on Edwards.

Lap 315 -- Carl Edwards continues to push Jimmie Johnson for the lead, while Greg Biffle, Mark Martin and Brian Vickers round out the top five.

Lap 310 -- Jimmie Johnson, who still has a shot at gaining the five-point bonus for leading the most laps, continues to lead Carl Edwards and Greg Biffle. Through Lap 309, Biffle has led 151 laps, while Johnson has been on point for 141 laps.

Lap 300 -- Carl Edwards, Jimmie Johnson, Greg Biffle, Brian Vickers and Mark Martin are the top five on the restart. The rest of the top 10: Dave Blaney, Kasey Kahne, Scott Riggs, Michael Waltrip and Elliott Sadler.

Lap 295 -- Robby Gordon blows an engine to bring out the eighth caution. He has yet to finish any of the four races in 2005. ... Carl Edwards, Jimmie Johnson and Greg Biffle are the first three cars off pit road.

Lap 286 -- Green-flag racing resumes with Jimmie Johnson leading Greg Biffle, Mark Martin, Carl Edwards, Scott Riggs, Dave Blaney, Brian Vickers, Jeff Burton, Kasey Kahne and Elliott Sadler.

Lap 281 -- Leaders come to pit road. ... And Jimmie Johnson beats Greg Biffle out of the pits with a 13.5-second stop -- the No. 48 team's best of the day. Biffle had an issue with his front-left tire and was in the pits for a tick more than 17 seconds.

Lap 278 -- Kyle Petty blows an engine to bring out the seventh caution of the day. This is the first race of the year that he did not lead at least one lap.

Lap 277 -- Joe Nemechek to pit road with an engine problem. However, he returns to the track after a stop.

Lap 270 -- The top 10: Greg Biffle, Jimmie Johnson (more than 5.7 seconds behind), Kasey Kahne, Carl Edwards, Mark Martin, Dave Blaney, Joe Nemechek, Scott Riggs, Jeff Burton and Brian Vickers.

Lap 261 -- Greg Biffle now has led one-half of the race's 260 laps.

Lap 247 -- The lap leaders: Greg Biffle (117 laps), Jimmie Johnson (117), Ryan Newman (5), Carl Edwards (4), Dave Blaney (1), Dale Jarrett (1) and Mark Martin (1).

Lap 238 -- Racing resumes with Greg Biffle, Jimmie Johnson, Jeff Burton, Kasey Kahne and Mark Martin in the top five. The rest of the top 10: Scott Riggs, Carl Edwards, Dave Blaney, Brian Vickers and Jamie McMurray.

Lap 233 -- The sixth caution of the day, again for debris on the track. The leaders come to pit road on Lap 234. ... The race off pit road: Greg Biffle, Jimmie Johnson, Jeff Burton, Kasey Kahne and Mark Martin.

Lap 230 -- Stop us if you've heard this before: Jimmie Johnson and Greg Biffle are running 1-2. They have combined to lead 218 of 229 laps (95 percent).

Lap 220 -- Jimmie Johnson continues to hold off the charge of Greg Biffle, while Carl Edwards, Mark Martin and Jeff Burton are Nos. 3-5. The rest of the top 10: Kasey Kahne, Scott Riggs, Dave Blaney, Michael Waltrip and Joe Nemechek.

Lap 210 -- Ricky Rudd, who had run 130 laps in the top 10, falls off the pace with a brake problem, and Jeff Burton moves into the top five.

Lap 207 -- Green flag flies after the fifth caution period.

Lap 204 -- The race off pit road: Greg Biffle, Jimmie Johnson, Carl Edwards, Ricky Rudd and Mark Martin.

Lap 202 -- Caution is out again as Bobby Hamilton Jr. crashes in Turn 2.

Lap 200 -- It's still Greg Biffle and Jimmie Johnson running 1-2, with Mark Martin, Carl Edwards and Ricky Rudd rounding out the top five. The rest of the top 10: Elliott Sadler, Dave Blaney, Kasey Kahne, Jeff Burton and Scott Riggs.

Lap 190 -- Roush Racing cars continue to dominate the top five -- Greg Biffle (first), Mark Martin (third) and Carl Edwards (fourth).

Lap 181 -- Kurt Busch returns to the race, 20 laps down.

Lap 180 -- Greg Biffle and Jimmie Johnson continue to pace the field, checking out by more than 3.5 seconds.

Lap 169 -- Green-flag racing resumes with Greg Biffle, Jimmie Johnson, Mark Martin, Carl Edwards and Elliott Sadler in the top five. The rest of the top 10: Ricky Rudd, Dave Blaney, Kasey Kahne, Jeremy Mayfield and Jeff Burton.

Lap 158 -- Kurt Busch blows a right-front tire and hits the wall, bringing out the fourth caution of the day. Leaders come to pit road on Lap 160. ... Joe Nemechek is penalized for running over the cones upon entry to pit road; he's sent to the back of the lead pack.

Lap 150 -- In what has become a common theme through four races, there are a couple guys riding around out front -- Greg Biffle and Jimmie Johnson -- while a few other guys settle in spots 3-5 -- Carl Edwards, Mark Martin and Joe Nemechek. ... Anyone have a No-Doz?

Lap 140 -- Greg Biffle and Jimmie Johnson continue to run 1-2, while Joe Nemechek is third and Carl Edwards is fourth.

Lap 130 -- Jimmie Johnson again shows the way ahead of teammates Greg Biffle and Carl Edwards.

Lap 123 -- And they're back to green-flag racing. Greg Biffle returns to the point by winning the race off pit road, followed by Jimmie Johnson, Mark Martin, Carl Edwards and Joe Nemechek. There are only 16 cars on the lead lap, after Jeremy Mayfield received the "Lucky Dog" pass, while 12 cars are one lap down and six others two laps behind.

Lap 118 -- The third caution of the day as Mike Wallace comes to pit road smokin' like the Marlboro man. Leaders make their way to pit road on Lap 119.

Lap 115 -- Jimmie Johnson leads Greg Biffle by more than a half-second, while Carl Edwards, Joe Nemechek and Mark Martin are the only other cars within 5 seconds of the leader.

Lap 100 -- Jimmie Johnson leads Greg Biffle, Carl Edwards, Joe Nemechek and Mark Martin. Rounding out the top 10: Kasey Kahne, Ricky Rudd, Elliott Sadler, Dave Blaney and Scott Riggs. ... Polesitter Ryan Newman is 18th -- one lap down.

Lap 90 -- Green-flag racing resumes with Greg Biffle leading Jimmie Johnson, Carl Edwards, Joe Nemechek, Mark Martin, Kasey Kahne, Elliott Sadler, Ricky Rudd, Michael Waltrip and Dave Blaney.

Lap 86 -- Leaders roll off the track for pit stops.

Lap 85 -- Caution flag flies for debris on the track.

Lap 82 -- Dale Earnhardt Jr. again falls two laps behind.

Lap 80 -- Greg Biffle now leads Jimmie Johnson by more than 2 seconds, while teammates Kurt Busch and Carl Edwards are more than 4 seconds behind the leader.

Lap 73 -- Jeff Gordon returns to the track after being caught up in the Lap 1 crash.

Lap 70 -- The top 10: Greg Biffle, Kurt Busch, Jimmie Johnson, Carl Edwards, Kasey Kahne, Joe Nemechek, Mark Martin, Elliott Sadler, Scott Riggs and Michael Waltrip.

Lap 63 -- Dale Earnhardt Jr. is penalized for exceeding pit-road speed, falls two laps down to leader Greg Biffle. Junior gets one lap back on Lap 66.

Lap 60 -- Race leader Jimmie Johnson, who has been on point for 54 laps, comes to pit road.

Lap 53 -- Green-flag stops begin with Bill Elliott entering pit road.

Lap 50 -- The top 10: Jimmie Johnson, Carl Edwards, Greg Biffle, Kasey Kahne, Joe Nemechek, Mark Martin, Scott Riggs, Michael Waltrip, Elliott Sadler and Dave Blaney, who entered the top 10 after Kurt Busch came in on Lap 49 with a flat tire.

Lap 40 -- Jimmie Johnson, with Carl Edwards on his tail, continues to lap the field -- and the front-runners are closing in on putting defending race winner Dale Earnhardt Jr. a lap down.

Lap 30 -- Michael Waltrip, who started 37th, is running eighth. Meanwhile, polesitter Ryan Newman is struggling to stay in the top 15.

Lap 20 -- The top 10: Jimmie Johnson, Carl Edwards, Kasey Kahne, Greg Biffle, Joe Nemechek, Scott Riggs, Ryan Newman, Elliott Sadler, Tony Stewart and Mark Martin.

Lap 10 -- Jimmie Johnson has opened up more than a half-second lead over Carl Edwards, Greg Biffle, Ryan Newman and Kasey Kahne.

Lap 6 -- Racing resumes with polesitter Ryan Newman leading Jimmie Johnson. Carl Edwards, Greg Biffle and Kasey Kahne round-out the top five.

• Red flag lifted; race resumes under caution.

Lap 1 -- Crash exiting Turn 2 ... damage to Casey Mears, Bobby Labonte, Travis Kvapil, Jeff Gordon, Matt Kenseth, Robby Gordon, Jeff Burton, Shane Hmiel among others.

1:27 p.m. -- Green flag waves to begin the Golden Corral 500 -- "only" 12 minutes past the race's posted start time.

1:17 p.m. -- "Gentlemen, start your engines!"
