Racing Log?

Would it be against any rules/would anybody be interested if I started a thread highlighting our trips down the track? I already do it at a forum I moderate, I can copy the posts her if there is interest.

I ask, because it's not exactly a mopar... (68 camaro)

It was built as a nitrous car, we striped it down to an all-motor 427. We kinda hurt it, plus it had weak valve springs and wasn't holding pressure. So after a trip to Reher-Morrison Racing engines all of 5 miles away, it's now a 505 cubic inch rat. The first video below, was provided by the builder of the car, in Georgia.

New package: Scat 4140 Forged steel 4.25 Stroker Crank, Callies Comp-Star H Beam Rods, Ross 14:1 Compression Pistons, Erson Reher-Morrison Spec Camshaft, Comp Cams Roller Lifters, Manley Timing Chain, 4.350 Bore (.100 over).

our NHRA registered car number is 494. The 426 Street Stock/Hot Rod was the previous owner's NHRA/IHRA number. Long story, but the car has had 4 owners, but we're only the second owners to take it down the track.

It's cool with me, but just be careful about the forum links. As far as I know, we have no problems with racing forums, but I could be wrong.

I wouldn't think there'd be, 2 completely different realms. I know the admins here and blocked off a few, but because of overlap conflict..I admin RF (one of 5 admins, we split operating cost) so i'm sure I'd know if there were (I'd hope)

No runs at the track for me. The closest is 2 hours away. I've ran 3 people on back roads though. :)

W 90's Nissan 240 SX (Mild mods)
W 90's Nissan Altima (Mild mods)
L New Mustang GT w/ some kind of kit (Got me in 1st, started to catch him at the end of 2nd, just as I started in 3rd, had to slow because of a car.)
L Same as above

Found out chrome timing cover doesn't fit double roller chain. Other than that, has been fairly simple. The Spira-loc's for the wristpins were aggrivating at first. Four of them per piston is a tad tedious. Not to mention 6 rings per piston (4 oil rings, 2 compression rings).

Checking endplay. Turned up around .008"

Well, half of the short block is done. Put 4 more pistons in it, and we can start on the valvetrain.

Here's what I come up with for compression ratio. The pistons claim to be about 14:1.

4.25" stroke (verified from TDC to BTC using caliper)
4.350" bore (verified with caliper)
51cc dome on piston (per Ross)
121cc combustion chamber (per DART)
.041" head gasket (our choice)

Volume of cylinder = pi-r-squared-height
raw cylinder volume = 3.141591 * ((4.350/2)^2) * 4.25 = 3.141591 * 4.730625 * 4.25 = 63.16217792859375 cubic inches
combustion chamber volume = chamber volume = 121cc
head gasket volume = 3.141591 * ((4.350/2)^2) * .041 = 3.141591 * 4.730625 * .041 = 0.60932956662241684118679603655609 cubic inches

Compression ratio = everything (BDC) divided by something (TDC), with combustion chamber cc including gasket due to zerp deck height
= (((63.162.... ci - 51cc) + (121cc + .6... ci )) / (70cc + .6... ci))
= (((60.04996697859375 ci) + (121cc + 9.98512261 cc)) / (70cc + 9.98512261 cc))
= (((60.04996697859375 ci) + 130.98512261 cc) / 79.98512261 cc)
= (((60.04996697859375 ci) + 7.9932026 ci) / 79.98512261 cc)
= ((68.04316957859375 ci) / 79.98512261 cc)
= ((68.04316957859375 ci / 4.88099165 ci))

= 13.940439660164907268382645153675:1 compression.

So, last night, the engine only had 1 cylinder head on it. Tonight, it's almost ready for Fire in the Hole.

One of our neighbors has been in China for 5 weeks, and got back on thursday. So yesterday he came over to see how the car was, and jusst saw the block on the stand (it didn't have the head on it yet). He said that hopefully we'd have it together by next week.

He came over again tonight, everything was hooked up and put in. He goes "Where did all the [low wage workers] go? There's no way you two did all that in one day!"

So now, 3 of our 4 neighbors are actually hoping that they wake up to the sound of a racecar. We are lucky that all our neighbors are car people!

A few things aren’t to our liking, and could be contributing to lost speed. We will be taking the oil filter off tomorrow to check for metal, then may possibly head over to Crandall for the Automatic Pro-Mod show. Pictures are online HERE.

Went to Crandall last night. Car is deadly consistent. However, we found out that #7 has been weak. We changed plugs and oil yesterday before we left, and the #7 plug had no sign of life. After the plug change, #7 was marginal at best.

Either kennedale's clocks are fast, or Crandall's are slow. We ran 5.95, 5.96, 5.95, 5.93 at kennedale, and at Crandall in very similar air conditions, ran 6.00, 6.02, 6.02, 6.00, 6.02.

Day 1 (Friday):

After making a slew of suspension adjustments this week, we're running all 3 nights this weekend. Tonight was a test for the suspension changes, tomorrow is a bracket race, and sunday is a pink-style all out race.

-----------------------------------------
Day 2 (Saturday):

We learned alot today. We learned that CoG matters, Air pressures are giant variables, trans-brakes can slip, and that greasy tracks SUCK.

This morning, we went down another 3/4" on the shock mounts.

Pass 1: The track temps was 125 degrees. It blew the tires off. In the slo-mo, the tire wads up in the first half rotation, then spins completely around for a full rotation, before hooking back up. It ran a 5.961 at 114 and change.

Pass 2: The actual track temp under my feet was 133 degrees. Not sure where the 119 registered from. Ran a 5.963 at 115 and pennies. Didn't spin the tires as hard, although rotations 2 and 3 are slipping a little. It was hooked up at the top end though, first pass at 115.

Pass 3: Put simply, dad was trying to go in really shallow, and he actually was too shallow. The car rolled backwards when it went on the transbrake. He couldn't re-stage because the transbrake was still locked out when it quit rocking. They timed him out, so it was a wasted run. No clocks for our lane, and the other guy was a second and a quarter off his dial.

Pass 4: This was first round of bracket eliminations. We didn't know they used a "cross-talk" tree. Since dad's used to leaving on the top amber, the long first bulb messed up the delay box, and he went 0.357 second red. But, the other guy was leaving first, and he went .006 red. So the "First is worst" rule applied, and we moved onto the second round. The tire wadded up for the first 1/4 of a turn, but then the following 1.75 turns, it simply blew the tires off. Ran a 6.001 at 114 and change.

Between our first and second rounds, one of the super-pro cars (in their second round) threw a rod. So we had a good 45 minute downtime while they cleaned up oil from the 330 to the turnoff, and all the way back on the return road. This allowed the track to gain shade, and the track temp dropped from the 120's and 130's down to 96.

Pass 5: With the changed conditions, we had no idea what to pick for our dial-in. We'd ran 94's and 95's at night, but because we had been spinning the tires all day, we chose to dial at a 96, and go down to 8.3 psi (normally 8.5). The good news: the dropped PSI and better conditions made us go faster, and we didn't spin the tires. Bad news: We broke out by a full .01 of a second, with dad DUMPING at the speed trap. It would have easily been a 92 or 93 had he stayed in it. Result was a 5.951 at 110 and change. In the slo-mo, you can see that it briefly slapped the wheelie bars (which are at 8.25" at rest, but point down under launch), spun the tires at the first full rotation, carried the front tires about 10-15 feet, and actually left on the bottom amber. It was recorded as a .017 light.

--------------------------------------------

Day 3 (Sunday):

It'd 1AM after a triple header. Anyone expecting a race report, is crazy.

We made it to the semi finals (All Out 4). 2 Time Trials, 2 Qualifying runs, then 3 rounds of racing.

I think we're getting closer to where we want to be...

Just put a new toy on the car: http://www.gcdataconcepts.com/x6-2.html

Really not a bad deal for $129. It's all self contained, plugs in like a flash drive (they even supply a 1 meter USB cable), has the graphing utility on the storage chip (so any computer can read it), just really well thought out. All I had to do was solder on the leads for my external switch....that was the fun part, especially with such a wore out soldering iron, it doesn't even have a tip left. But I did get it done.

The orange LED's are the "power on" indicators. I'm going to add a relay to turn off the dash one though, so that it turns off if the ignition is on (rear will be always-on).

The rear axle is pretty much out of the car right now. The driveshaft and shocks are the only things holding it in place.

Would anyone care to find the cause of why our car went left when it loaded the rear suspension?

The scary part is, 4 pairs in front of us on our 3rd pass, a car ripped the axle out of the car on launch. Had a heim rip open. We could have very well done the same thing.

10-17-10- We went to North Star Dragway in Denton yesterday for the Twin Bracket races. This was only our second bracket race, and we just had different issues all day long. Our first pass wasn't too bad, with a 5.83 to start the day at 9:30 in the morning. Our second pass had an issue, as the car shut off for an instant of a second, and came through at a 5.85. For first round, we red-lit by .02, and the car shut off completely for over a tenth of a second, before coming back to life and trucking down the track to a 6.02 at 116 (needless to say, we lost on a 5.84 dial). Since we knew there would be plenty of time until time trials for the night race, we took the opportunity to comb through the wiring of the car, found what we believed to be the source of the power failures, and corrected it.

In the time trial for the night race, we ran a 5.850, and the power issues had disappeared. However, the weather changed dramatically, and we dialed a 5.83 for first round of our first tech card. We underpredicted the weather, as the car hooked violently and turned to the right at the launch while wheel-standing, thus having to get out of the throttle and let everything calm down. A chase ensued at the top end, and the opponent crossed the finish line first, on the brakes, with a margin of victory of 0.05 seconds.

For the first round of 2nd tech card, our weather station showed a density altitude of 254 feet. Based on the previous run, we knew the car would bite hard, so a tire pressure change was made. As for the run, the car did indeed bite hard as predicted, and we broke out with a 5.802 on a 5.81 dial.

yesterday/today (saturday) was the last race of the year. We triple-entered in 3 different races. Had some noise under braking, thought it was just brakes. In first round, we get back, and find a big oil spot where we were pitting.

We shredded the pinion bearing, trashing the pinion and ring gear. Never thought we'd break a Dana.

Getting headers made after thanksgiving, then pulling the entire driveline out of the car. Engine comes out, heads go to reher-morrison, trans comes out, we're gonna gut and rebuild it (actually blew the front pump up 2 races ago, just been limping it along using high idle to build trans pressure), and axle's coming out to go to a builder, we probably won't do it ourselves.

So I left off with the broken axle.

New gears, new front half of transmission, milled heads, and a car diet later...

New record is a 5.639 at 120.46 with a 1.33 60', density alt was something like 500 below and it was a BRAND new starting line (first night of non-street tires).

Running Electronics and quick door points in Denton, Pro and Top Sportsman/Quick Door in Kennedale.
