Distributor also needs to be changed.

yes sir all run the 90 model distributed and if I'm understanding right knock the la weights of my converter and run the magnum flex plate filing out the one hole. My biggest concerns was making sure the tbi will operate correctly with the magnum heads and better air flow thanks again for the reply I just want to get this old truck running good so I can continue fixing some other things

tbi is JUNK

Better than a carb.... :)

volaredon 03-16-2018 07:02 AM

I guess that depends on the carb, but would have to say no way to that.... I have owned many carbd vehicles and never had the issues with any of those, that I have with the 88-91 TBIs.... in the process of swapping engine on my son's 89 Ramcharger and in the process the TBI is being scrapped. That and my former 88 D100 were some of the most problematic vehicles I have ever experienced, whether mine or somebody else's..... have much less issue with a Thermoquad or AFB/Edelbrock..... at least in my own experiences.... just finished fighting a no start on my son's 90 W250 with, get this, TBI....... pure junk. it was a crutch to get them from Carbs to magnums. Working on cars and trucks for a living those are not the only Dodge TBIs I have experienced by far.... I did have ONE TBI over the years that was pretty good, only 1. that was on a 3.9 in a 90 Dakota.

I have driven a selection of tbi vehicles, and still have one out in the garage. 92 Astro AWD, with the 4.3, and, yep, TBI. It has about 300,000 mile on it now, original engine and trans, and still runs great. Of course, the body has about rotted away......

Back in the day, I had an old (75) Volkswagen Rabbit, with a carb....... that thing SUCKED. (and it was a solex carb......) I think it was originally designed as an ashtray, and solex adapted it for use as a carb.... the Sirocco I bought to replace it had the CIS system. (mechanical fuel injection) and it was a whole new animal. Ran better, started better, had more power, got better gas mileage....... Still NO electronics to it. (I think it may have even still had a points distributor, but, I don't remember any more. :) )

Fuel inject, especially electronic fuel injection, IS more complicated than a carb, thus, it can develop more interesting problems........ Still, I MUCH prefer injection to carb....... If I could, I would convert my tractor to TBI. :D
