Default 97 Ram 1500 5.9 4x4 abs / ebrake light on

Well w/ such good luck today getting the code 11 fixed, thought I'd throw this up there. I've had the ABS and ebrake light on now for about 4 years. things I've done:

- ABS sensor replaced 3 times on rear axle, nothing worked.
- changed ABS unit under center dash
- replace fuses in fuse box

Nothing fixed it. Only goes out when I reset ECU by pullin negative battery cable for a little while. Comes back on about 5-10 miles of driving it.

I've heard theres another sensor on the transmission up front that might fix this, but not sure how true or if it will work. Speedo and all seem to work fine if this is the speed sensor they were talking about.

anyhoo, any ideas?

2 or 4 wheel ABS?

The module under the dash, (inside the cab) is for the air bags, not ABS.

Does your speedometer work reliably?

I think 2 wheel abs, not sure.. how can I tell? The part I replaced under dash is part number 56026812..which I thought was absl not airbag.. part look up calls it the abs control module..

Ok, looked it up, it's mounted IN the dash, not under it.

Check your front wheels for ABS wires. If no wires, then, RWAL.

Ok, then there isn't much that can turn on the ABS lite.

Is the brake lite on as well?

yes, the brake light and abs lights are both on. Have been now for about 4 years. would have thought they'd burned out a long time ago, then I wouldn't have the problem. lmao.. really lost as to what to further look at. again, I've heard a sensor on the tranny fixed a number of this similiar issues, but not sure what sensor or if it was the speed sensor, however my speedometer and tac are perfectly fine.

On the newer trucks, probably the output speed sensor. Not sure the older ones have it... they have the VSS on the tailhousing....

Might be a brake switch...... (on the pedal.)

did some more digging tonight. was able to ground pin 13 at the computer connector under the column and am getting code 6 which is "erratic speed sensor while rolling" . Now my question is, the sensor for the ABS that is mounted on the rear axle, is that the speed sensor or is it possible there is another up front that could cause this.

Also want to point out, I understand the rear sensor basically talks to an exciter ring in the pumpkin. When I first had the light come on, the sensor had exploded so to speak and turned my diff oil copper colored. I cleaned it out and noticed a piece of the sensor was wedged in the ring gear and was able to remove it. I need to change rear diff oil again soon and was wondering if this exciter ring can be replaced or exactly what it is, a pic would be good too.

thanks,

Yeah, the sensor on the rear diff is the only wheel speed sensor your truck should have.

The tone ring bolts on behind the ring gear. Need to do some serious disassembly to change it out. If it isn't damaged, (missing teeth) just leave it there.
