Question 92 5.9 Dakota no start problems

HI everybody:

I bought a used Dakota, discovered that the motor was junk and replaced it with a used motor from a 93 Cherokee.

It worked fine for about two days and then died. Engine cranks but won't fire. I replaced the crank sensor and have power to the ECM/PCM. I have no power to the primary side of the coil and no spark. The auto shut down relay has been swapped with all 3 of the other relays in the fuse box so I think that is not the problem.

Where do I look next? What is the voltage that I should see at the crank sensor plug?

I am afraid this will be some simple/stupid fix that I just can't find.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Steve

You will only see power at the coil/injectors for about 3 seconds after turning the key on, unless the PCM sees the engine turning.

Most of the sensors on the engine want a 5 volt reference signal.

What brand crank sensor did you put in there? What was the original engine in the Dakota??

the original motor was a 5.9 as well. both are port injected. the crank sensor came from O Reilly's The mid price range item.

I didn't think the magnum 360 came out till 93....... 92 should still be LA motor???

See if you are getting spark while cranking.

My bad. It's been a tough week,

They both are 5.2L (318).

I have already checked the coil primary and secondary sides, No output to the distributor and no power at the plug underneath,

The crank sensor is BDW #CSS815 from O Reilly.

The Dakota got the Magnum 5.2 in 1992 model year.

The 5.9 went Magnum for 1993.

And to add to this, a first gen. dakota (87-96) was never offered with a 5.9 (360) engine. Only 5.2 (318)

Check for power at the coil while cranking. The PCM will only supply power (via the asd relay) for three seconds at key on, after that, it has to see the engine turning. (crank sensor.)

Found the problem. the distributor pickup wire harness was cut or worn through.

GOOD NEWS! the truck runs. Bad news is I broke the right side power mirror backing out of the garage.

If it ain't one thing its another.
