If you have the NV3500 5 speed, I believe it will, but hopefully others will step in.

I wasn't aware that they made a 1500 5.9 with the 5 speed. Did it have the nv3500 or nv4500?

They didn't. If it had a 5 speed, it was a 5.2. Someone may have changed to the larger motor later. The heavier duty trucks got the 5.9 and a 5 speed though, but, that was the NV4500. NV3500 never came behind a 5.9 in anything from the factory.

The autos have flexplates and yes I believe they will swap you may have to use the torque converter also, but I would recommend getting a better aftermarket one with a higher stall speed.

Can you recommend a good brand for an aftermarket flex plate/ flywheel?

A stock flexplate is fine, for the torque converter Hughes and TCI are both good brands that have been around for a long time.
