Default Front wheel whine..

89 Dakota LE 3.9L 2wd manual..122,000. Front right wheel started to whine at 40+mph with the dreaded cyclical whomp..whomp.. So I figure wheel bearing. I take it to the shop I use.. and they said
the wheel bearings are fine, just dry. So.. after repacking I pick it up. The whomp is gone....but the whine still comes in at 40+. I can just feel the vibration on the pedal and up through the steering column.
Now since parts are fairly cheap.. I can replace the rotor/hub.and bearings etc for about $70. (Since the races are already installed its not that bad a job).. Think this will solve my problem or I'm just wasting $?
thanks..

Get the tires checked first.

Check tires.

If the bearings WERE dry, they're toast now; I'd replace rather than "just repack". But I've also had two bearing failures (same side! I bet the second one was due to not properly packing, though, since I did that on the side of the road ... ) in the past 3,000 miles (!!)

Be sure to properly pack the bearings.

I use one of these https://smile.amazon.com/Lisle-65250.../dp/B0002NYDYY and use the moly bearing grease; currently running some Stabil brand in there.

Be sure to buy the good bearings; I like Timken and SKF myself. From RockAuto, you can be under $22/side (SKF brand, most expensive bearings and just about the most expensive seal).

Rotors will run that up a bit; the Raybestos is about $35 each.

So, even with shipping, should be under $150 delivered, plus your packer and grease gun.

Do get new brake pads while you're at it.

Default ,

Now that packer is a nice little tool... I'll definitely get one. Timken set 11 inner.. Set 16 outer.. AcDelco rotor/hub and a SKF wheel seal. and away we go..

thanks.....
