used transmission
2001 ram 2500 4x4 Gas (automatic)
Turns out I need a transmission, so I started looking in craigslist for a used transmission.
Do you guys have any tips on identifying a good transmission?
the guy is willing to sell it for 125$ but I won't be able to test it out as it has no engine.
Also what other vehicles have the 46RE in case I go to the junkyard.

Moving this to the second gen RAM section.....
Any truck with a gas v-8, from 96-2002 will work. (5.2, or 5.9 liter engine) Trouble you run into is the electronics. They changed in 2000, so, on the older trans, you would need to change those out to match the year of your truck. (also need the correct retainer for the newer governor stuff.) If you have something else to drive for a bit, could buy the trans for cheap, and rebuild it yourself.......
What's wrong with the current trans?

The current transmission makes a knocking sound only in park. Thought it was the torque converter or flex plate but no as I put new ones in and it still has the same knock sound.
It still shifts good no problems it just has that knocking sound.

I have been following a video from transmissionbench.com but I cant seem to find any bad components. I did open the pump as MoparFanatic21
suggested. any idea on what area i should focus on.

Does it do it only on startup after sitting a while or does it do it all the time? Is it a fast knocking sound or slow? Does it increase when RPMs increase?
Not sure how closely related the 46RE is but I've had a knocking in my 45RFE that occurs on cold startup mostly. If it has been sitting for several days, it's really bad and I have to wait for the torque converter to fill with fluid before it'll move in gear. I was told it was a drain back issue but I haven't been able to resolve it. This started about 15 years ago.
