This article applies to the Dodge Ram (1994-2008).

The Dodge Ram 1500 is a well-equipped, full-size truck with multiple trim levels, packages and options. However, more recent models have undergone more of a "facelift" than the past 1994-2008 models. Pickup truck enthusiasts who are fine to not drive the most technologically advanced, although luxurious in its own respect, pickup truck on the market will find the best way to "dress up" the Dodge Ram 1500 is to choose a great trim level and then add packages, as desired.

Second Generation

Standard Trim (ST)

The standard trim (ST) offers exactly what its name suggests: Standard or "base" level trim. A kind of "bare bones" pickup truck without many bells and whistles, the ST comes with vinyl seating and manual everything. The ST does not come with carpet.

Special Luxury Trim (SLT)

The special luxury trim (SLT) is popular with truck enthusiasts seeking more bang for their buck. This model comes loaded with a full range of standard features, including, but not limited to, power windows, power mirrors and power locks, a tilted steering wheel with built-in steering wheel controls, leather steering wheel cover, carpeting and an upgraded Infinity stereo sound system. Common Questions

What's the best way to learn the history of truck, along with its make and model?

Your vehicle identification number (VIN) is found on the door jamb as well as in the top corner of your dashboard on the driver's side. This 17-character serial number reveals the make and model of your truck as well as information regarding where it was manufactured and trim level. Have your dealer print your truck's "build sheet" to determine your truck's true history.

Can I make interior and exterior modifications on an SL?

Absolutely! However, before you swipe your credit card, it might be more affordable to consider purchasing a used SLT model, which already comes loaded with many of the modifications you might want to make, such as power windows and a tilted steering wheel. Consider the age of your current ST model vehicle along with the number of miles currently on the vehicle. The SL model can hold up well past the 200,000-mile mark, but as it reaches that milestone you can expect to pay more in repair costs. You could save money in the long-haul by purchasing a used SLT model with most or all of the packages you want. Figure out the cost for both scenarios, and then decide.

How high in luxury can I go?

The Dodge Ram 1500 SLT comes with a high level of luxury. However, the most revamped model came in 2002. If you want high gadgetry in your truck or a touchscreen console, consider going with an aftermarket upgrade that is both compatible and easy to install. Leather truck wraps, including leather-style wraps, can be installed on many body components, not just your console and steering wheel. Other modifications might include tray-type tables and interior LEDs, which could provide more luminous lighting for your cabin.
