New car, new tech

Fiat Chrysler looked at the vehicles that law enforcement was using, namely their patrol cars, and wanted to upgrade things far deeper than just a new car. The goal of the Charger patrol cars was more than just a nice set of wheels and a powerful engine under the hood. FC wanted a car that kept officers safer. With that in mind, they introduced the Officer Protection package on cop cars that include safety measures to shield officers from ambush, especially those from behind.

Officer Protection Package

The Officer Protection package was added on the 2017 pursuit Chargers at no additional cost as a way to improve awareness while parked and working inside the cabin. The system uses the rear Parksense system along with the Parkview backup camera to detect and alert officers to any movement happening at the rear of the vehicle. The sensors and cameras that are in place so that you and I don't hit an object will be used to save lives or be used as a lookout. If motion is detected behind the car, the vehicle will trigger an alarm inside the cabin to alert the officers to a presence. The windows will then roll themselves up, lock the doors, turn the reverse lights on and flash the taillights to illuminate the rear.

Law breaking HEMI engine

Under the hood, there is a double overhead cam 3.6-Liter Pentastar V6 engine with Variable Valve Timing putting out 292 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque. Compared to the old 3.5-liter engine the new 3.6-liter gets 11% better fuel economy and can go 33% longer before it needs to be serviced. The engine runs on 87-grade unleaded octane but is fully FlexFuel compatible for E85 ethanol. However, that is not the only engine that will be available to law enforcement offices. Those who opt for the more powerful flavor of powerplant will be treated to a 5.7-liter HEMI V8 with FuelSaver Technology lest they burn up taxpayers gas money frivolously. The choice of this engine will give the driver access to 370 horsepower and a zero-to-sixty time of just six seconds. The V8 Pursuit Charger also gets a choice of either rear wheel drive or an all wheel drive system.

Extra protection can never hurt

These vehicles also get another upgrade to get the men and women of our law enforcement agencies safe from attack: ballistic door panels. These are strictly for the driver and passenger doors and are factory installed Mopar equipment that is NIJ Level III protection. These doors can withstand and trap almost any round found on the market today.

Driver focused interior

Officers will also get this 12.1-inch touchscreen with Uconnect multimedia system that allows integration of law enforcement systems and is designed to be operated with gloves. The touchscreen is only part of the new mobile command center that has an improved vehicle system interface for easy equipment integration and the ability to operate in even extreme temperatures. To free up some space for console-mounted equipment Dodge moved the agency computer to the trunk of the vehicle. Even the seats for the driver and passenger have been modified to better accommodate officers as they received distinctive bolstering so that belt-mounted gear can fit unobtrusively.
