Drag Strip Shenanigans

Although the time for the Charger, Challenger, and Camaro is drawing near, enthusiasts can still revel in their presence, especially during intense battles at local quarter-mile dragstrips. One notable venue is the Bandimere Speedway, located just outside Morrison and Lakewood in Colorado, famously referred to as 'Thunder Mountain'. Situated at a high altitude, this challenging racetrack attracts a diverse range of motorsport enthusiasts, as showcased in the recent video from the Wheels channel on YouTube.

Camaro vs. Challenger

In the featured video, viewers are treated to a glimpse of various vehicles awaiting their turn to achieve quarter-mile glory at Bandimere Speedway. The main focus of the video revolves around two quintessential American muscle cars: a potent 650-hp Chevy Camaro ZL1, and a more understated third-generation Dodge Challenger.

485 HP vs. 650 HP

The Challenger in question is reportedly of the R/T Scat Pack variation, equipped with a (6.4-liter) Hemi V8 engine. Despite the power difference between the two vehicles, with 485 hp for the Dodge and 650 hp for the Chevy, various dragstrip-focused enhancements such as drag wheels and tires, adaptive SRT-tuned drag suspension, and the optional deletion of front and rear passenger seats may level the playing field.

Grippy Camaro

The Camaro clearly has a significant grip advantage out of the gate, leaving the Challenger behind in what would seem like a mismatch. But as they both gain speed, the Dodge starts to hold its own, finishing closer to the Camaro ZL1 than many would imagine.

Narrow Split

Ultimately, the thrilling outcome of these intense races is revealed after multiple runs to ensure accuracy, including lane switches. Although one might anticipate the results, the gaps between the competitors are surprisingly narrow, with the Camaro edging out the victory.

End of an Era

The retirement of the ICE-powered Dodge Charger and Challenger, as well as the sixth-gen Chevy Camaro, is imminent after the end of the 2023 production year for the former and 2024 for the latter. These iconic vehicles will bid farewell to the automotive world, making way for the seventh-gen Ford Mustang, known as the S650, to claim its position as the final V8 powerhouse.
