Unique Conversion Process

This Demon 170, finished in Pitch Black paint and featuring a Demonic Red interior, stands out not just for its aesthetics but for its rarity and modifications. It is one of just a handful of convertibles among the 3,300 Demon 170s produced by Dodge, making it an extremely unique collectible. Originally designed as a hardtop, this car underwent a significant transformation at Drop Top Customs, a renowned shop in Florida.

Extensive Modifications by Drop Top Customs

Drop Top Customs, led by Jeff Moran, has received the approval of Dodge as the manufacturer's official open-top Challenger builder. The process involves removing the roof and pillars, which necessitates adding extra aluminum bracing to maintain the car's structural integrity. A motorized canvas top is then installed, capable of retracting at the push of a button and conveniently storing in the trunk without compromising much storage space. Moran, who even owns a convertible Demon 170 himself, coordinates these meticulous conversions.

Exceptional Auction Performance

One particularly noteworthy convertible Demon 170 recently made headlines when it sold for an astonishing $242,000 at a Mecum auction. This car had only 30 miles on the odometer and was number 1,100 out of 3,300 produced. The high auction price, coming in significantly higher than the stock vehicle's MSRP of $96,666, is a reflection of its unique nature.

Performance Specifications

The Dodge Challenger SRT Demon 170 is celebrated for its jaw-dropping performance capabilities. Equipped with a supercharged 6.2-liter V8 HEMI engine, it produces a staggering 1,025 horsepower and 945 pound-feet of torque. This power enables the car to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in just 1.66 seconds and complete a quarter-mile in 8.91 seconds. These impressive statistics are possible, of course, with the benefit of E85 fuel.

Legal and Practical Considerations

The Demon 170’s incredible speed has even caught the attention of the National Hot Rod Association (NHRA), which banned it from drag racing without a roll cage or parachute. Despite these limitations, the convertible version continues to draw attention and high bids at auctions, with its exclusivity and unique features appealing to enthusiasts.

Market Shifts

With Dodge retiring the HEMI engine and other muscle car manufacturers like Chevrolet stepping back, the Ford Mustang remains one of the few V8-powered muscle cars in production. This shift in the market may further elevate the collectible status and value of cars like the Challenger SRT Demon 170, particularly those with rare modifications like the convertible conversion by Drop Top Customs. And this auction would certainly support this case.
