Quite the catch

Someone out there just paid a cool $1 million for quite possibly one of the best combos of all time with a combined horsepower of 1,485. The cars, to get a little more specific, were a 2018 Challenger SRT Demon and a 2017 SRT Viper. The Viper ended production for the 2017 model year because it couldn't comply with the new airbag regulations in the U.S. On the other hand, the Demon was limited to just 3,300 cars. According to Fiat Chrysler's VIN coding, the final example that was sold is actually identified as number 3,314.

Well, that's interesting

So why is the ID 3,314 when there are just 3,300 examples of the Demon in existence? During the first batch of deliveries, three Demons possibly sought to return home since they caught fire during shipping and were subsequently replaced by other models with different ID numbers. That puts the numbers are 3,303. After that, another 10 to 15 vehicles didn't meet quality control standards and Dodge replaced those cars and their order in the VIN system.

Can't split them up

With that out of the way, this past Saturday the gavel came down at the Barrett-Jackson Northeast Auction in Connecticut with all of the proceeds benefiting the United Way charity. If you're curious, there was no option to bid on them separately. The cars are painted the same shade of red and will come with special badging, documentation, and "one of a kind memorabilia."

Buzzing with electricity

"The energy in the room for any charity car is special, but selling these two incredible vehicles together side by side for charity will really be cause for fireworks,” said Steve Davis, president of Barrett-Jackson. “Avid collectors know just how rare and incredible this opportunity is, not just to own a piece of automotive history, but to own two of the hottest, most powerful cars on the market today. The added benefit of supporting two great causes in the United Way and American Heart Association is what makes each charity sale at Barrett-Jackson such a memorable experience on the auction block."

That Viper used to be black

With the two cars selling for $1 million dollars, there was a 10% buyer's fee that sent $100,000 to the American Heart Association.

“Heart disease is the number-one killer, which is why Barrett-Jackson is 100-percent committed to the battle against it,” declared Craig Jackson, chairman of Barrett-Jackson. “The recent passing of our good friend Dave Ressler inspired Carolyn and me to donate our 35th Anniversary Corvette he once gifted to my mom, Nellie, and me. We auctioned it in Scottsdale to honor the memory of Dave as well as Greg Mauzy, two great members of the collector car community gone too soon.”

Fit for a king

“Pairing the last Dodge Challenger SRT Demon and the Dodge Viper production cars—two of America’s most sought-after vehicles—under the roof of Barrett-Jackson gives someone the ‘last’ chance to own this unique piece of automotive history, and Dodge/SRT the opportunity to raise money for a cause close to our hearts.”

The million dollar sum will be donated fully to Dodge's charity of choice, United Way.
