1988 318 Fuel Injection HELP!!
Greetings!
I am a Dodge newb....at least to the FI 318. I purchased a truck from a friend (very cheap) and am picking it up tomorrow. It's a 1988 Dodge Ram 1/2 ton 2wd (mint condition) with a fuel injected 318. I was wondering if anyone had any troubleshooting tips for this engine? I drove it, and it is lacking power really bad. I hope it's not normal, but it wouldn't even spin a tire in the gravel from a dead stop.
I figured I would do a carburetor swap, however, I'd really like to leave it the way it is if it's worth it. This truck is going to be a driver, and it's what I am going to drive throughout the winter.
Is this fuel system notorious for being a horrible system? Is it worth trying to keep? I'd really prefer whatever method yeilds a decent fuel economy, although I don't think you are allowed to use the phrase "fuel economy" and Dodge in the same sentence. hehehe
I'd appreciate any advice you all have. Thanks everyone!!

RE: 1988 318 Fuel Injection HELP!!
It is the first year for this system and last,it was changed in 89,but it is ok.I have the same truck and it runs fine, for now, changes coming.
Start with the easy things,a good parts tuneup, plugs, wires, cap, fuel filter, air filter,02 sensor, check timing, check for vacuum leaks, check injector flow, check for any codes.

The TBI 318 was only rated at 146 HP, IIRC. The 2.2l intercooled Turbo's of those years made more horsepower (174) and almost as much torque (200) as the 318 did. The only 318's that ever really ran "good" were the old police interceptors and then the magnums.

Thanks guys. I appreciate the responses.
I might just throw a intake, carb, etc. on it....maybe some longtubes, and see if that makes it a little more driveable. I plan on checking the compression next week, when I get back into town. I am actually the 3rd owner of the truck. It only has 132k on it. I still can't believe how good of shape the whole truck is in.
