My 1999 Durango is stuck in 4 wheel drive, I can shift the floor lever from 4H to 2wd i see the light on the dash go from 4h to 2wd, but whe im driving down the road i can feel that the front wheels are between locked and unlocked, because when im driving the wheels are squeeling, chripping. I have driven the vehicle in reverse to see if it will disengage the system but it did not. Any ideas what may be the problem.

I did notice that i have a leak comming from the transmission pan, is the automatic tranmission fluid also used in the transfer case.Is the transmission fluid transfered between the transmission and the transfer case.

Im just frustrated, that the vehicle has been basically maintenance free except for normal upkeep. ANd know all this is happening, i have to also replace the upper and lower ball joints. So that why im just frustrated

So again any help with the 4 wheel drive problem will be greatly appreciated in getting this resolved.

 

the the manual shift linkage underneath the truck going into the transfer case they have a habit of wearing loose and letting go, it might have popped off while you had it engaged

and try backing up and swerving to let it drop out of 4wd

 

Also back up turning the wheels all the way right then straight then back then straight to get any axle bind out.
