Well the bad news is 2002 was the worst year for Neon transmissions. It was the first year for the 4 speed automatic and not very well thought out. Fortunately, Chrysler quickly improved them the following year. Mine took a crap at 81K miles and it was well maintained.
But, don't assume the worst. I would check the easy stuff first. Fluid level, fluid/filter condition, adjustment of the shifter cable and go from there.

Thanks for your response! So far my father and I have changed the fluid (ATF +4) and a filter and gasket change. We took a look at the linkage and cables, but not in depth. I took the car to Advanced Auto parts to have the codes checked, which I'm researching now. There were 8 total - all about the transmission. (Ratio mostly) I'm hoping to change the grounds in the car this weekend but I'm not really sure what I'm doing.
