Default Engine Code P1682

i know this code has to do with the alternator
is there anyway to tell if the alternator is going bad besides taking it too an auto parts store.
now it seems to charge until i put it into drive then it stops charging
any suggestions?????

ok guys i found the problem it was the alternator fuse it has blown
so i will get a new one and see if that helps

well, i made it blow... i forgot to unhook the battery when i pulled the alternator and the wire from the back of the alternator touched the metal case on the back and sparked a bit and that was it. it had blown to keep from messing the alt. up.

anyways thanks for the response guys
