5.7L Hemi-Broken Valve Spring - Help
#122
If your valve seals were goosed, you would be burning oil.
Typically, this is seen on the "overun" like when you climp up a long hill and have your foot in it. Then when you go down the other side let off the gas. If the seals are damaged, you get plumes of blue smoke. Also you'd have that horrible burning oil smell. You 've probably experienced this, when following an oil burner on the road at some point in your driving career?
Another way to test the seals I learnes from an old hand is, to rev the engine to about 2-2500 rpm for about 5 mins. Then let the engine tick over for about another 5. Then give the engine a rev and watch the exhaust. If there's blue smoke then the seals are goosed.
Hope this helps?

Question guys....maybe a dumb one but want to make sure. I have the 6.1 exhaust springs and ordered new Manley Pushrods, the Hemi 5.7L 5/16 6.600 intake and 7.825 exhaust. These will be ok correct...meaning I don't need the 6.1 pushrods due to the fact that the valve clearances would not be correct? I saw in someone's sig they had 6.1 exhaust springs and 6.1 pushrods. Thanks

Correct 16 6.1 Exhaust springs is needed the install heights and seat pressure of the 6.1s exhaust spring is perfect for us 5.7 guys with a few upgrades, the 6.1 intake springs has a higher install height due to the longer 6.1 intake valve. If you ordered manley 5.7 pushrods your are OK, the 6.1 push rods are a great CHEAP upgrade to the stocks BUT Im sure the manleys are forged so they will be doing the same thing as the 6.1 pushrods.

The only reason to change the push rods would be IF the 5.7 rods will not be stiff enough to handle the 6.1 compression tension. The 6.1 push rods MUST be the same length as the 5.7 rods, much longer, you've toasted the engine.
The distant has not changer from the valve seat to the cam if you have not changed the stem length, rockers, cam.
Don't get confused with the diff spring heights when sitting static. The 6.1 spring will compress to the same as the 5.7 when snapped in with the keepers. Now, if one runs their goat hot enough to a white hot temp, there may be a little stem stretch due to little stronger spring.
