Default Drum to Disc Conversion

I'm really interested in putting money into my car once I get my tax returns back in a week or so. The few things I've been thinking about include things like; side skirts, dual exhaust, srt spoiler, rear drum to disc brake conversion(although I'm not sure of how much that would cost) newer rims with newer tires, mopar 3-d taillamps... **** like that. I'm just wondering I guess as to whether the rear brake conversion (along with anything else you might disagree with) is really worth doing to the car or should I invest into something else?

Disc brakes in the rear really aren't worth it IMO.

95% of your braking comes fromt he front of the car. So, discs in the rear is almost a waste. Plus, its a lot of work, you need a lot of parts to convert over from drums. The good thing about it is that you can get the parts from he junkyard off of a Neon with rear discs.

I'd just invest it in something else.

Rear drum conversion is gonna be a PITA. You can probally find one in the junk yard with rear discs and convert it. You are not goint to pick up that much braking power, unless you are doing some racing or somethin. The drums are fine, besides the fact that they are ugly with rims on the car.

Plus I heard disk brakes are heavier in weight and drums are lighter. Of course disks will perform better though.

First off braking is about 70-30% Front to rear on a FWD car. Disks are lighter than drums and perform better. If you do convert over to rear disks and you are looking for a better braking ability than you will need to get beter fronts as well to keep balance.

So if for instance a car came with 10" rotors in front and drums in rear but when offered in 4 wheel disk it had 10.5" rotors up front you'll want those too.

A properly engineered 4 wheel kit is probably best to maintain balance (ie - propertioning and metering valves).

All the bakes in the front will lose out to stock if you don't tak advantage of 30% of you available tire traction. Also if to much in back then you are locked up to early and not getting what you can either.

the underlying problem is getting the breaks tuned in correctly. if 1 break pad grips a hair harder than the rest your going to spin out.

as long as you can lock up the tires, then your brakes are fine. it's the rubber on the wheels that really determines braking ability. if it starts sliding at 70% braking, then you don't want to spend money on brakes until you've upgraded the tires.

Corey, I'd do the rear disc conversion, but if I were you i'd wait until it's time to do drum shoes. It is literally easier to change to rear disc than screw around with all the little springs in the drums.

I'm lucky, my ACR is rear-disc already, but we need to do rear brakes on my brother's car, and you bet we're switching to disc. Don't expect a brake distance reduction though, and they are slightly heavier. They look better, and are SO much easier to work with though.
