On loan from the Wellborn Musclecar Museum is the Paint Chip Cuda inspired by an advertising brochure from 1970.

The 1970 Plymouth Barracuda is one of the most well-known muscle cars ever made. But not every 1970 Cuda is the same. Not even close. The engine choice, transmission, and even the color of the car can have a drastic impact on the value of the car today. But in 1970 people were not worried about what the value of the car might be 53 years later. They just wanted the coolest car they could afford. And one of the biggest decisions with buying any car is what color to select. The 1970 Cuda was available in about two dozen colors. To help potential buyers choose their favorite a brochure was created that showed each color on the car. The car itself didn’t actually exist. Until a man named Tim Wellborn got involved and decided to create the Paint Chip Cuda.

Wellborn is a well-known Mopar collector and is the man behind the Wellborn Musclecar Museum. That museum decided to bring the famous Paint Chip Cuda to the 2023 Music City Mopar Show. There it was captured by Matt Gause and posted on his YouTube channel. It is an incredible car with an interesting story.

Wellborn saw that brochure for the 1970 Cuda and thought it would be cool to create a real-life version of that brochure car. He bought a 1970 Cuda and had it restored to look like the car in the picture. The most obvious visual change was the creation of 25 different colors on one side of the car. But the Paint Chip Cuda is about more than just paint. The brochure was created to show all the options that you could spec for your car in 1970. That included zoomie headers, wheelie bars, and different wheels. These were all added to just one side of the car. Headers on one side, a single wheelie bar, etc. The driver’s side of the Cuda was solid green and had none of the options installed.

A 1970 Plymouth Cuda is a beloved car so taking one and modifying it in a manner like this could upset some Mopar purists. Wellborn is well aware of this, so the 25 different paint colors were done over top of a wrap. The wrap will protect the original paint should someone wish to restore it to original condition someday. The other options installed can easily be removed as well. So, as wild as this car looks today, there is an original Cuda underneath that can be easily be brought back to life.
