Dodge D/W

It doesn’t get any groovier than this Dodge D/W, a perfect example of ’70s excess!

The ’70s were a weird yet wonderful time. We drove around in some pretty sweet trucks (and conversion vans), listened to some great music (except maybe disco), and sported some pretty rad hair. The customization scene was pretty simple too. Take your truck or van, throw on as many accessories as you could, and cram it full of velvet and shag. The more over the top, the better. And by those standards, this 1977 Dodge D/W pickup is the king of the era.

We spotted the wild custom truck over in the Autotrader classifieds, where it instantly transported us back to the bygone era. Quite honestly, there’s so much period goodness going on here that we’d expect to grow a shag just sitting in it. For starters, there’s that wild exterior sporting boatloads of chrome and miles of gold pinstriping. Whoever built this thing probably just flipped open a mail-order catalog and bought one of everything.

We’re talking roof spoiler, wooden bed stakes, a sun visor, fiberglass running boards, and even some sort of mesh to “protect” the headlights. The dual scoop hood is a proper Mopar piece, the Cragar wheels a nod to the past. But things get even better on the inside. Because there you’ll find acres of velvety pleating, including a pair of curtains in case the rear window louvers don’t block out all the sun.

One thing’s for sure, you won’t mistake this thing for a Dodge, either. From the Ram logos on the door panels to the glass-etched (actual) rams on the rear window, it’s pretty obvious. And you won’t miss the fact that there’s a 340 under the hood, since there are countless displacement badges everywhere. But such was life in the ’70s, a time of wonderful excess. And if you dig what this Dodge D/W is dishing out, we won’t blame you!
